The American civil war was one of the toughest and deadliest wars in American history. This was where the Confederate States of America fought for their independence. It took place from 1861 when the war broke out till April 9th 1865 when confederate commander Robert E. Lee surrendered at the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House. In the civil war soldiers died in large numbers since the medical knowledge at that time was little so most soldiers never stood a chance even after enduring single gunshot wounds. At the beginning of the war both sides had many volunteers. Later on, people stopped volunteering and there was a shortage in the number of soldiers required to fight. As a general in the war I would use natural features such as rivers to form defensive lines against the enemy. This would restrict the enemy from using frontal attack and they would therefore have to use the flanks. This was the strategy used by confederate generals to hold back union troops. The confederates used the Virginia Rivers to give strength to long defensive lines, to screen marches from east to west and to force Northern generals to use flank attacks rather than front attacks. As a general I would favor usage of rivers and streams to transport soldiers and their supplies as opposed to railroad transportation. This is because river transportation was less likely to come under attack than railroads. This was the strategy used by Union generals for transportation which the confederates hadn’t discovered.
