My Experience with Classical Conditioning

Though it may be difficult to believe, I had never tasted a sip of alcohol until my freshman year of college. A combination of dedication to my sport, track and field, fear of my father¡¦s reprisal, and dreams of getting a scholarship kept me from indulging in the normal temptations that teenagers succumb to during my high school years. But being on my own in college and having secured a scholarship, allowed me to give way to temptation and indulge myself in the standard college drinking atmosphere. Still, my dedication to running kept me worried about my weight because I knew that alcohol had a lot of calories and I did not want to fall victim to the dreaded ¡§Freshman

Before conditioning diet coke elicited no response in me, and alcohol caused a reflexive response of gagging with no prior learning. Like Pavlov¡¦s dogs learned to associate the sound of the bell with the presentation of food, so did I associate the taste of diet cola with the presence of alcohol. As far as immediate physiological responses were concerned, the taste of diet coke became equivalent to the presence of alcohol. Therefore, the alcohol is the unconditioned stimulus (UCS), because it elicits a response prior to learning, which is unconditioned response (UCR), gagging. The diet coke paired with the alcohol becomes the conditioned stimulus (CS), which would ultimately cause the gagging to become the conditioned response …show more content…
Since I had been so long cut off from living at home with my family and seeing my friends, this incentive was extremely desirable to me. If I missed even one meal, the weekend of freedom was taken away from me. This continued for several months, which kept me in the habit of eating at the scheduled times. Also, continually nourishing my body allowed my mind to function normally, and gave me the energy to connect with people and not be so preoccupied with eating and food.

Barrett Seaman’s ‘article “Bingeing Became the New College Sport” points out how drinking has been part of college life since the first universities. According to Seaman drinking on campuses has changed drastically between the 1960’s to the 1990’s, college student have switched from drinking beer to hard liquor. Students are no longer just drinking for fun but to the point of hospitalization, maybe Seaman’s right we are approaching this issue the wrong…

The learning theory of attachment focuses of two concepts; operant and classical conditioning. Classical conditioning as an explanation for attachment describes the baby receiving food (and unconditioned stimulus) and producing an unconditioned response (happiness) and the mother feeding the baby will be the neutral stimulus. The baby will then experience the mother giving them food (and therefore happiness) a number of times and then learn to associate the mother (now a conditioned stimulus) with the feeling of happiness (a conditioned response) and thus an attachment will form. Operant conditioning describes attachment as a reinforced response. When a baby gets food it 's discomfort will become happiness and the baby will associate this feeling with food and therefore food will become the primary reinforcer. The person feeding the baby will also be associated with the happiness and therefore become the secondary reinforcer and an attachment will form.…

The fourth conditioned stimulus I would like to pinpoint is the response of security and comfort from a police officer that provided a mountain dew for her. The unconditioned stimulus is police officers, the response is feeling safe and comfort, and the conditioned stimulus is mountain dew. The officer who first found her bought her a mountain dew and provided her with affection and feeling of security.…

Drinking on college campuses has become a huge problem. For example, in the 10th century only old people used to drink, but now students drink more than their parents. Students see their parents drinking, so they may think that drinking has no effect on health that anyone can drink so why can’t the students drink? Therefore, college students have been drinking alcohol since the 14th century. Barrett Seaman’s article “How Bingeing Became the New College Sport,” appearing in TIME magazine on August 29, 2005, explains how binge drinking is affecting college students. It also suggests that lowering the drinking age might help solve the problem of binge drinking. This article has much information on how and where students get drunk.…

Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which a potent stimulus obtains the ability to evoke an innate response that was originally elicited by a neutral stimulus. In classical conditioning, a UR is an event that occurs naturally in response to some stimuli. On the other hand, a UR is the stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response without learning. A CS in classical conditioning is an originally neutral stimulus that, through learning, comes to be associated with some unlearned responses. Finally, a CR is the learned response to the originally neutral but now conditioned stimulus (CITE BOOK). These are the basic components involved in classical conditioning. Classical conditioning theory was first discovered and described…

My hope for this literature review is to shine some light on a prevalent issue that affects college students all over the United States. Binge drinking and eating disorders are becoming the two biggest health-related issues on college campuses. They can lead to alcohol abuse, obesity, and a host of other ailments. A web-based study (Weeder, 2011) from a private university collected data using a very descriptive self-report survey. The students were offered extra credit if they completed the survey. The students were emailed, and also told that not completing the survey would not hurt their grade. They used courses that represented a large cross-section of students. A total of 211 undergraduate students participated in the study. They used male and female samples. Binge drinking in this sample was very high for males, 86% of male students and 63% of females reported binge drinking within the past two weeks. Binge eating was reported lass than binge drinking 48% of the sample was reported. The percentage of females who did both was 34% and for males it was 39%. The results of this survey were high compared to the national date comprised before hand. Also the students of this survey were predominately white and have been known to binge drink more than other racial groups (Wechsler, 2002) There are some limitations that can affect the validity of the survey. Students could have been untruthful when answering the survey; also extra credit was offered to them to complete the survey. Women also had more risky weight loss behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, laxatives, diet pills, and skipping meals.…

Our understanding of classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning has allowed us to unlock many of the answers we sought to learn about human behavior. Classical conditioning is a technique of behavioral training, coined by Ivan Pavlov, which basically states that an organism learns through establishing associations between different events and stimuli. This helps us understand human behavior in an assortment of ways. It makes it clear that almost everything we do is based on patterns of stimulus and response. For example, if you were bitten aggressively by a dog as a child, you may be still scared of dogs today. That is because the dog caused you pain, which in turn caused you have anxiety towards dogs. Because you associated the dog with pain, and the pain caused you to have anxiety, therefore you brain associated seeing a dog with feelings of anxiety. Same thing applies to getting a text message. Let’s say you’re sitting around doing nothing an all of the sudden your phone vibrates. You’ll probably go and check to see what message you got. This relates to a classical conditioning experiment because you have associated your phone vibrating with getting a message.…

As I grew up there has always been a really good example of classical conditioning. In this case I went to Golden Corral when I was sick and before going I thought it was a smart idea to drink a big glass of milk since I love milk. Well we get to Golden Corral and while we are waiting in line my body decided to regift all that milk I drank earlier all over the floor and bottom of the wall. To this day I never go to Golden Corral because I get instantly sick to my stomach. My condition stimulus here would be the restaurant. My unconditioned stimulus is flu I had at the time. Then leaving the condition response being me getting sick at the restaurant. Unfortunately this has happen a total of 4 times, lucky for the workers the next three times I made it to the restroom. Now as soon as I step into the restaurant and automatically get sick to my stomach.…

Society holds many ways to control one’s actions and thoughts. Through behavioral conditioning humans learn to thrive on their teacher’s ideals. Science and literature have both aided in the development of associative learning such as Aldous Huxley's novel, Brave New World. Behavioral conditioning, a vital part of today’s society, helps develop a child’s ability to learn; however, when taken to new extremes as displayed in Brave New World, it destroys individuality by pre determining one’s future.…
