Soul Mates The word friend has been used as a verb in the English language since the early 15th Century. The term comes from German origin and has existed since the founding of Old English. The word friendship is one of its derivatives' that is used to indicate supportive and co-operative behavior between two or more persons. The term implies to persons in a relationship that involves mutual knowledge, esteem, affection, and respect. Along with a degree of providing services to friends in times of need or crisis, it has many classifications that vary from person to person, as well as nation to nation (Friend). Acquaintances are similar to friends, yet there is the absence of any emotional ties or anything on a personal note. Someone who is enjoyable to be around, but not someone a person looks to for emotional support. Someone people see as a casual friend that has no intimate connection (Acquaintance). Best friends, or close friends is a classification used to identify individuals who share extremely strong interpersonal ties or have a longtime association with one another. They like to do everything together and share secrets between themselves. Someone who displays a supportive nature giving encouragement and inspiration when necessary.
Braxton Page 2 Casual relationships or "Friends with benefits," share the bonds commonly associated with best friends, although there are no demands on the individuals to make a formal commitment to one another, having a bond that is purely of a sexual nature. A colleague is a term associated with friendship; however it is most often used when describing an associate in a profession or office setting. Someone whom one has ties to on a professional level.
