The subject I chose for my interview is one of my best friends, Jonathan Manrique. We work together in elementary school. Jonathan comes from a small family; he is one of five children in the family and only has one close relative in the United States. Jonathan is American but lived most of his life in Venezuela (since he was 2 years old) until 5 years ago when he moved back and is 32 years old. Jonathan graduated in Business Administration in Venezuela and took classes to become teacher when he moved back to 2 United States. He works for one of the biggest school district in Houston Texas. He would probably be considered middle class. Jonathan is an extremely smart and independent. I think he is a very interested interviewee.…

Columbus County has become my home for the past three years. During my exploration of Columbus County I chose to ask Michael Brown, Mark Howard, Christina Perdue; MD, Dr. Kevin Bratton; Ph.D., and Addie Mae Haley. I thought it would be interesting to get the opinions of five people with different occupations, and experiences in life. Michael Brown is a Southeastern Community College student, his major is Education, geared towards a history profession. I received his thoughts during an interview at Southeastern on February 5th. Mark Howard is a Shift Manager at McDonalds here in Whiteville, as well as a retired Army Soldier. I was able to talk to him face to face during one of his breaks on January 29. Christina Perdue; MD, is my family’s doctor here in Whiteville at Southeast Primary Care. Dr. Perdue is always very busy so I spoke to her via telephone for her opinion on February 17th. Kevin Bratton; PhD, is one of our deans here at Southeastern Community College, and an awesome instructor. Dr. Bratton responded to my email on January 31st. And finally, the best for last, Addie Mae Haley, she worked in Blueberry and Tobacco fields when she was young, and after she was married she became a domesticated house wife. Mrs. Haley’s my oldest interviewee, at the great age of 85, and was born and raised in Columbus County. I was able to interview her face to face on January 20th. All five of these Columbus County residents gave me a great outlook on what they all though was important to…

“The Meeting” The room is silent other than the steady hum of the air conditioner. Businessmen and location supervisors all sit around a large rectangular table, waiting for the man in charge. There is a projector screen at the head of the table with an opening slide displayed. It reads “Monthly Safety meeting” in plain black text on a white background. A few of the men lean back in their chairs and relax. Two start a casual conversation. Even in the silence of the room I cannot understand them because they are mumbling so quietly. It’s an early Monday morning, and everyone is still a little drowsy from the weekend.…

I am a decedent of Africa, what part I could not tell you. There are different shades of black in my family and some could surely pass for white or Indian. My ancestors did not willingly come here they were brought here in chains and sold off to the highest bidder. They were slaves of the South; to be exact Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. The time-line is perplexing to me because the family history died off with the elders. I do know that once slavery was over lots of my ancestors stayed in the states that they came to know as home. Some moved around but many stayed in the Southern region of the United States. During their journey, they became farmers and store owners that prospered enough to keep their families living comfortable for the times.…

For my diversity assignment, I chose to interview my classmate Annemarie Farina. I conducted my interview on February 5th in the Library at Pete’s Café. I first met Annemarie in my Foundations of Public Health class, when a few of us agreed to meet up to study. I wanted to interview Annemarie because although we met because of the same major, we have differences that are outside of the classroom. This is her second year at UNC Charlotte, and this is my first. We also differ in other things including race, ethnicity, and place of origin. She is an overall good person, and I thought it would be intriguing to find out more about her.…

Teenage years can be a challenging time for many individuals. Beginning at the age of 11 through 20, adolescence is defined as a “transitional period in the human life span, linking childhood and adulthood” (Santrock 2009). At this point, the person is no longer a child, but not yet an adult. This makes it a very critical and sensitive time frame for identity formation.…

My most prized possession is my mental stability and ethical background that I have acquired from my southern upbringing. Growing up in a rural community in the south and being reared by elderly parents allowed my seeds of character and respect to be nurtured by an entire village of people who saw my potential and wanted to see me succeed and thus pushed and prayed for my wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. As a child, series of unique experiences of being able to develop intimate and loving relationships with almost everyone in my community made me appreciate the influence of everyone on my life. It was not long before I realized that no matter how old or young, rich or poor, or educated a person was, everyone contributed to humanity’s niche…
