Clinical Decision Support provides specific information to health care staffs regarding a patient health care record, and this support system will help provide good quality care to the patient. This system has many different tools to help the health care provider an easy ways to care for the patient such as alert system, clinical guidelines, templates, and even more. With this system, I think it benefit the patient care by simply an easy communication for the staffs that are caring for that patient. Those who have access to this can see what is going on to the patient and how to continue on their care for him/her (Health It, n.a).
2. Review Bates’ article on the CDS. Do you think all CDSS (clinical decision support systems) adhere to the 10 commandments set forth? Explain your answer …show more content…
I do believe the CDSS does adhere some of the 10 commandments but of course not all.
One thing I found that is true is number 7, “Simple Interventions Work Best”. The simple the production is the easier to use. With EPIC, I would it is simple when we are doing the flowsheet/assessment on a patient. For every assessment, there is a already list for you to used and it is so easy and fast. However, with the good, there is of course the bad. At BMC, when we log into EPIC, it would take awhile to the screen to log in or due to small problem. I’m not sure if it’s the computer problem or the program, but I can imagine if it does constant happened, the flow of the work will slow down (Bates, et al.,
2013).
3. Describes for me what you see as a some of the advantages and disadvantages to the features and function now available in EHRS for clinicians to use when caring for a patients
Advantages: Easy communication between all the health care providers - Quick and easy charting - Function to look of any medication and the doses for any patient (pediatric or adult) –
Disadvantages: Financial due to always have to update for new system – for clinicians that are not good with technology might have difficulties understanding how to use it - Patient privacy/security are not secure
4. Describe an “unintended consequence”? How can we prevent such things from occurring in the future?
Unintended consequence is when there is a medical error that was provided to a patient by accidently and can lead to emergency situation. In a health care field, accident does occur which is why it is so important to always be careful and accuracy when caring for a patient. Administrate medication is one of unintended consequence that can happen, when nurses or physician does not administrate accurate dosages to the patient. There are technology now that made it easy for staffs to administrate medicine, however it is not always good to always depend on technology. As a nurse, it is important to always do your 5 rights and 3 checks when given medication to prevent any accident from happening (.
5. What would be some areas of research that would be need?
It would be great to see more patient information being secure because all their personal information is kept on a computer and if something does happened all the patient information will be gone or stolen, which can be dangerous. Also, I think it will be really interesting to see if EHR can up come a way to communication among other different vendors, like between EPIC and Powerchart.
