Some speculate that the link is inflammation, which is present in both hardened arteries, or atherosclerosis, and gum disease, which can include sore, swollen gums. The theory is that periodontitis which involved infected gums can cause the bacteria to spread to other parts of the body. So says , which leads to infected pockets of germy pus. That is the type that raises the worry for heart problems. It allows bacteria and other toxins to spread below the gum line. Scott Merritt, DMD, founder and partner of Bridgemill Dentistry, said studies show the link. However, he is less than conclusive. He said inflammation is one of the main things that cause damage to blood vessels, including those of the heart. "The two appear to go hand-in-hand," Merritt says. "In the absence of gum disease, there is significantly less of these bacteria in the heart.” (Miller) If true, he has noticed a correlation, which is not necessarily causation. A panel of dentists and cardiologists said that so far, no evidence exists that treating or preventing gum disease has any direct effect on heart disease. Science simply does not conclude that while the two conditions occur together, one does not necessarily cause the other. Outside factors have not been ruled out.
