Closer
In the video Closer by Benjamin Millepied shows a woman and a man dancing together and separately to the music of a piano. Their elegant body movement explains the tone and emotion of the dance. I find the melody of the piano to be quite soothing, that brings conclusion to the energy of the dance. One can see the elements of dance in this video. There is a lot of space in this dance and I feel like it completely complements the piano. It is almost mysterious in a way, like there is happiness and sadness at the same time. The visual experience almost makes you wonder what kind of relationship the man and woman have. I love music, and the piano really moved me when I watched the man and woman dancing. The melody is very powerful, it leaves questioning …show more content…
From the beginning the dance starts with the piano. Music is what fuels the dancers, I love the fact that you can capture the emotion of the two by watching and listening. “Movement is the essence of life, dance it’s ultimate expression” (Sorell). In order to be able to express yourself I think movement is what makes that possible. Being able to utilize one’s body in order to show the viewer the emotions and feelings you want to express is all done by movement and music. It is incredible how we can use our bodies in such a manner, along with being able to pick up and instrument and play what we are feeling. As said in unit two, dancing has evolved throughout the centuries, and with the time has come many different styles of dance. These styles could have been influenced by many things, one of them being culture. Just like with music, culture and upbringings can influence how one dances or plays music. In addition, I think kinesthesia plays a huge role in why we enjoy watching movement. Kinesthesia which is “the sensation of movement and position” is the reason why we have physical reactions when watching movement. These physical reactions that represent the emotions we are feeling is what fuels the arts. Taking a few minutes out of your days to just stop and look around and examine people’s movements is something I enjoy doing. People love

Anyone could just move their body if they want to (especially when the music is too great). But sometimes, it’s just quite odd when you dance or maybe give in to the music a little. Like maybe if you’re pooping and you suddenly danced. Or what if you’re on an orchestra and you just wanted to play an awesome solo?…

When I thought of dance for the first time, I believed it was just simplistic movement and structured choreography. However, dance can be interpreted as a story versus just following a beat through its unique body language, musical composition, and set of props. The Fall Dance Theatre demonstrates these traits extensively within its performances specifically the pieces “In Sleep, We Dream” and “I’m Still with You”.…

I really enjoyed watching this performance because the ballerinas moved so beautifully. They moved their hand to the music perfectly, which is where the Waltz come into the name. My favorite section of this piece is the introduction when you hear the harps playing. The ballerinas move so eloquently with the harps and it just amazed me. I also found myself swaying to the…

When I try and analyze what dances means to me, ultimately, I see it as a multifaceted entity. Dance is part of my identity and without it I believe I would struggle with understanding who I am. First and foremost dance for me has always been a form of therapy. Growing up I hated conflict and as a result internalized my issues. Through dance I was able to find a reliable outlet to release my frustrations, fears, and inhibitions, which allowed me to explore my personal struggles through movement. Secondly I believe that movement has the power to transcend boundaries and make statements that are often hard to say. Movement is an outlet to foster awareness, dialogue, change and growth while bridging the gap between artistic expression and community…

One of the first dances of the night was a ballet done, by a 9 year old girl. As she entered the dance area, it became very silent in the auditorium. You could almost hear a needle drop. Her costume was simple, dark in color, not shinny, as if not to distract the audience from her performance. Her white tights provided a focal point drawing the audience to watching the delicate moves she was executing with her legs. She started in first position quickly transitioning to 3rd and before you knew it she was spinning around on only one foot, pointing her toe towards the audience. She had a brief moment where it appeared that she fell out of pose, but immediately pulled herself back together, executing the next pose with perfection. Her face remained unchanged throughout the entire performance. She demonstrated perfect C shaped arms as she held them in the air bringing all her weight from her heels to the tips of her toes. This performance was very impressive for such a young girl. What I sometimes miss it facial expressions, but I suppose by the absence of expression the girl is allowing your mind to go wherever the music takes you.…

When dancers dance they don’t always realize the way their brain is training their muscles to do what they would like. Harvard neuroscience speaks to the findings on a PET scan that talks how dance develops thing such as the motor cortex which helps planning and control. In dance, especially ballet, the person dancing needs to have total control of their body and nothing less so always having the control over one’s own body they are training their motor cortex to always have control and it helps apply that to other…

The dance is extremely narrative it is telling a story that is deeper than what it showing; I believe it is telling a story of a couple who may be enduring a physical, emotional and mental abusive relationship that they are in. The woman had all worn long loosely fit garments of a pale color to show purity and innocence while the men wore nothing but black loose pants which showed strength. Each set of dance movements seemed random but they perfectly had fit with the music in a untrained matter. The energy throughout this entire piece drew the audience into wanting more and more it felt…

Susan Jaffe, a former principal with American Ballet Theater, encourages her students to imagine that they are the music, to use “the breath within the adagio, to find what is sharp, bright, staccato, lyric, soft, dynamic - all the different ways a dancer needs to move.” A dancer must add a bit of themselves into every single step, even those as simple as a tendu. Artistry is what separates students from the professionals. One must add individuality within the confines of the piece they are dancing. The choreography gives a dancer the mood and they fill in the blanks.…

The first dance began with the lights off and the stage dark. Then slowly the dancers walked out from behind the curtains and the lights came on. Beginning their dance, the dancers moved in fluid motions walking across the stage, performing graceful movements with their bodies. In one part of the dance, one of the dancers took another dancer and carried her on her back for several steps. This simple action seemed to demonstrate a comforting act, as though the dancer was carrying the other dancer to a place of well-being. This dance was beautiful to watch, and had several powerful moments.…
