Senior Dance Concert
The JMU Senior Dance Concert was produced and choreographed by the graduating seniors who majored in dance as part of their final thesis. The dance concert was held on February 11-13th at the Forbes Theater. The dance performances had mixtures of ballet, contemporary, modern, and hip-hop dance combined to create exciting and alluring dance pieces. The theme that the seniors chose for their final performances was “home”. The first dance began with the lights off and the stage dark. Then slowly the dancers walked out from behind the curtains and the lights came on. Beginning their dance, the dancers moved in fluid motions walking across the stage, performing graceful movements with their bodies. In one part of the dance, one of the dancers took another dancer and carried her on her back for several steps. This simple action seemed to demonstrate a comforting act, as though the dancer was carrying the other dancer to a place of well-being. This dance was beautiful to watch, and had several powerful moments. In another dance, the dancers had on modern and hip-hop clothes, …show more content…

There were no other sounds other than the girl singing while playing her Ukulele. Colorful lights beamed down on the dancers giving off different wavelengths of light from soft pink to yellow to blue hues that streamed around the dancers. The costumes that the female dancers wore were mainly pale or neutral colors that did not flash or distract the audience from the movements they were performing. Truly, I believe that this added a beautiful effect to the overall dance. This dance was a cumulation of the end and it seemed to state the dancers’ farewells and goodbyes to the place that they had called home for the last four years of their lives. It was a powerful performance full of emotion and

The first thing that caught my eyes was the colorful and unique dance regalia or outfit worn by the dancers. Bright colors such as yellow, orange, red, and light blue wrapped around the dancers beautifully. The older looking male dancers were wearing the feather warbonnets on the head and bustles on the back. Dancers with striking multicolored beaded and fringed outfits were crowding the dance floor. Some of the female dancers dressed simple with their colorful fringed shawls. I noticed that some dancers even had bells attached to their ankles or dance outfits that they wore. I also was told that the feathers and leathers used were inherited from their father up to their great grandfather. The sight was so magnificent – it made me excited to stay for the show.…

    Alvin Ailey Cry Analysis

This contrasting choreography is accompanied by a fast tempo piece of music, adding to the swift change in meaning on the last part of the performer's journey. The woman travels diagonally across the stage to affirm her power over all and to establish this with the audience. The choreography is feminine, with the dancer using her long ruffled skirt as a prop rather than a hindrance as seen in prior sections. The section reinforces the strength of freedom and the character's freedom. The dancer drops to knees, clasps her hands together and lifts them above her head following which, she throws them backwards and proceeds to then rise again without struggle. The section relieves the audience of the tension so imminent in the rest of the composition; the dancer has finalised the contradictory elements and the use of dynamics, space and time respectively have increased in consistency. The concluding section is simplified with uniform concepts ending the work. The dynamics transition to become solely percussive and vibratory and the tempo is consistently fast paced with simplified metre and a regular rather than syncopated rhythm. This secures the audience in understanding the piece. After being taken on a journey of empathising and witnessing the emotions of the dancer in the previous section, they are immediately enlightened to know the problem they were presented with at the beginning of Cry has been solved and the tension has been…

It was up close and personal. All I could do is reminisce on the discipline of my dance training as I wiggled in my seat with anticipation waiting for the curtain to rise. I could write about the performance from beginning to end, but I choose not to. However, I do want to write about a segment of the performance that evoked a riveting, yet somber mood that struck me to my core. Home. On Friday night, November 22th, a great concert was held again in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre of Brock University. This concert was performed by four young, energetic, and talent musicians: Vera Alekseeva play a violin, Austin Hitchcock plays a French horn, and Karin Di Bella plays piano. When I entered the theatre, my eyes were immediately caught by a beautiful piano on the stage under the bright light. Some students were taking pictures of the instruments. Before the concert start, the musicians were briefly introduced themselves and descript about the pieces they going to play. The audiences were exciting and interesting for the concert. It was a perfect opportunity to experience such a wide variety of music.…

As the performance commences, an immense yellow sun captures the audience, whilst the rest of the stage remains unlit, revealing the silhouettes of the still dancers, together in the formation of a V shape. As the performance gradually unravels, the dancers rapidly shoot up directly into space, standing with straight arms reaching above their heads, whilst dust is thrown and released into the air. The bodies begin to move in a dramatic however sudden and sharp manner across the stage. They have separated into two groups dancing in opposition and are somewhat symmetrical to each other. Assembled again, the dancers perform direct and strong hand and arm gestures to assist them across the stage, whilst the continuity of what sounds like a ‘pulsating heartbeat’ flows in the background. The movement becomes in more intensity, angular and linear suggesting that this is a dramatic, contemporary/lyrical styled piece. We can potentially recognise a few of Laban’s effort actions throughout the performance, as there are several slashing, gliding and thrusting body…

After watching all three choreographies of the ballet, I felt that Millicent Hosdon’s rendition provided the best relationship between the dance and the music. I believe that music played along with dance can really enhance the performance of each. Alone, each one my sound or look good, but if they are effectively combined, it is quite a sight to behold. I felt that Hodson achieved just that in his version. Throughout the performance, I felt that the dancers really moved their bodies in a way that complimented the ups and downs of the musical score very effectively. I noticed from the 3:00 minute mark to about the 3:35 mark of Part Two, a real synergy between the beat and the physical gestures of the dancers. As the trumpets finished accenting their notes, the dancer’s feet landed on the ground almost simultaneously. This process lasted throughout those thirty five seconds and really illustrated the attention and respect the dancers gave the music. The fact that such a small detail was accounted for also shows how much time Hodson placed into the choreography. Furthermore, in the latter part of that section at around the 3:25 mark, you hear the percussionist banging the timpani as the…
