November 10, 2014 Unit 8 Seminar notes
In this seminar it opened up with an overview of the discussion board.
We posted our rough draft in the discussion board. While reviewing someone’s essay should you review grammar errors in your critique?
Although grammar is important, we don’t want to spend time on grammar errors when there are bigger issues. Such as, supporting details, thesis statement should be clear, the purpose and audience, organization, and subject matter.
Thesis statement should be located in the introduction, see if not only they have the purpose stated but can we identify the audience in the thesis statement.
Discussion Pie and paragraph development:
Focus on each individual paragraph each starts with a specific point you are making about the topic. ( this is the P in Pie) Usually students don’t have focused topic sentences.
Often the point is the topic sentence, what is the point of this paragraph? What claims are being made? What will this paragraph prove or discuss?
For Example: Many high schools are requesting students to wear uniforms.
Why would high schools require this?
Cost less
Less bullying
Fewer distractions
We can make this to 3 paragraphs
How do we change bullying to a topic sentence?
Students who wear uniforms are less likely to be bullied in school.
What about cost? We want to educate the reader on how cost plays a role.
School uniforms are most cost effective than the latest fashion trends.
Fewer distractions topic:
With kids in uniforms, it will cut down on pressure of appearance.
When we have a focused topic sentence it will keep us on track in our writing. See on the discussion board if classmates are focused and on topic in draft.
Which would be relevant for the paper you are writing?
Statistics.
What should you avoid when writing an academic paper? Personal experiences, stories, anecdotes. This is an informal thing to do in an academic paper.
