The Joint Commission (2014) identified communication errors as the fourth highest root cause of sentinel events from 2004 through the second quarter of 2014. In order for nurses to be effective in their dynamic roles, they must be effective communicators with an array of interdisciplinary healthcare team members, patients and families (CCN, 2014). Communication can be frustrating, leading to pertinent information not relayed, resulting in the rise of potential errors and poor patient outcomes. Have you ever been frustrated when communicating with a physician, giving shift report, or consulting the physical therapist? To reduce frustration and potential errors and increase patient safety and outcomes, nurses must also be efficient in their communication style. The communication model, SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation), becomes an invaluable communication resource, when adopted and implemented by the facility and all healthcare team members are trained…

Health communication is a multidimensional process and includes aspects from both the sender and the receiver of the message. Communication skills did not appear on the average nursing school curriculum. Much has changed in the last decades; communication skills have become an integral part of training. At the same time, the patient has become more challenging, it is the age of customer service and patient satisfaction. Social responsibility, communication, and teamwork are imperative skills in the nursing field and without these skills numerous mistakes and misunderstanding would arise, which will affect the patient care directly and good quality of care will not be catered. Moreover, being assertive, empathic and inclusive knowledgeable with medical terminology and procedures in regards to the patient care would be desirable qualities for a nurse. The main purpose of the paper is to express my personal philosophy of nursing. The paper provides an observation of a framework of my personal practice of nursing and the reasons why I choose nursing as a profession. The issue is extremely important to be studied, researched, and analyzed as it represents the theoretical basis of each nurse and highly supports one’s life philosophy and the system of interaction the nurse has with the rest of the society. In my context with the patient, it is important for me to improve the nurse-patient relationship. In this relationship, there is a sense of trust and a mutual understanding exists between a nurse and a patient that build in a special link of the relationship (Harkreader and Hogan, 2004). (Peplau 1952, cited in Harkreader and Hogan 2004) note that a good contact in a relationship builds trust as well as would raise the patient’s self-esteem which could lead to new personal growth for the patient. Besides, (Ruesch 2007) mention the purpose of the therapeutic communication is to improve the patient’s ability to function. So in order to establish a nurse-patient interaction, a nurse must show up caring, sincerity, empathy and trustworthiness (Kathol, 2003). Those attitudes could be expressed by promoting the effective communication and relationships by the implementation of interpersonal skills. Johnson (2008) define the interpersonal skills is the total ability to communicate effectively with other people.…

My family’s coat of arms represents our energy and strength, along with our hope and generosity.…
