These test include an audiology test, psychological test, and tests done by the surgeon such as a cardiac, neurology, and blood work. Starting with an audiology test an audiologist will determine how profound ones hearing loss is and whether the individual could be using a hearing aid. A psychological screening is done to determine if the patient is mentally prepared for a cochlear implant and to establish a relationship with the psychiatrist in order to complete therapeutic rehabilitation after the surgery. Lastly, the surgeon will determine the overall health of the patient to see if they have the capability to undergo anesthesia, since the device will be implanted surgically. After the surgery is complete it is recommended to attend rehabilitation from the audiologist, speech language pathologist, teachers and counselors (American Speech-Language).
