A common example of a codified constitution is the American constitution. This constitution came into effect in 1787 not only laying out the rights of the American citizens but also the powers of the government, whereas an un-codified constitution is not set out in one written document but has a wide range of sources. The United Kingdom’s constitution is a well-known example of an un-codified constitution. The UK’s constitution has many sources, which include the royal prerogatives, conventions, common law, statute law and the European Constitution.
The difference between a codified and un-codified Constitution is the flexibility. The codified constitution is very rigid whereas, the un-codified constitution is adaptable to the different circumstances that may occur in the country. The flexibility of the un-codified constitution means that amendments can be made rapidly and appropriately but a codified constitution can take longer to be amended.
