Cognitive Therapy Essay
Cognitive therapy is the hypothesis that a lot of how we feel is controlled by what we think. Cognitive therapy is a treatment process that offers patients some assistance with correcting false self-convictions that prompt certain states of mind and practices. Depression is a medical condition that requires treatment by a mental health profession and can be cured with proper treatment. Two main therapeutic approaches to depression are Biological and Cognitive-Behavioral. The cognitive behavioral perspective believes that one’s thoughts have the ability to affect or trigger depression. Aaron Beck, negative thoughts, generated by dysfunctional beliefs are typically the primary cause of depressive symptoms (2007). Beck also affirms that there are three main dysfunctional principles that dominate the thought process of those who are depressed: 1) I am inadequate; 2) All of my experiences result in defeats or failures; 3) The future is hopeless. Together, these three principles are known as the Negative Cognitive Triad.

    Cognitive-behavioural therapy or CBT is representative of the integration of behavioural therapy and cognitive therapy. It encourages the empowerment of an individual to be able to change how they think (cognitive) and how awareness of particular problematic patterns may impact upon our consequent responses (behaviour) (R ch7).     Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), as its name suggests, blends the theoretical insights of both the behavioural and cognitive therapies. CBT’s origins can be dated back to Stoic, Taoist and Buddhist philosophies which link human emotions to thoughts and ideas (Beck et al, 1979).
