Respect for Freedom
You learn the importance of respect when you’re just a child. You should show respect everyday rather, it's a job, school, or your family. Yet star athlete Colin Kaepernick has failed to show respect where it is most deserved. By refusing to stand during our national anthem, he showed disrespect to our military, our veterans, and our country. Star athlete Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, refused to stand for the “star spangled banner”. Unfortunately, this disrespectful act is not a one time occurrence. The final preseason game was thought to be “The annual salute to the military night”, there was a marine band, a parachute team with the Navy Seal, and 240 sailors. When the marine band started playing, Kaepernick just kneeled. Since Kaepernick is …show more content…
By not standing for our flag he is showing disrespect to our veterans; showing respect for them is the least we can do, for several of them gave up their freedom for ours. Countless are permanently injured, and several have died, but he says he can’t stand due to the fact that he feels this country isn't representing people the way it is supposed to. During 9/11 when rescuers went into that building they didn’t stop to judge the color of each other's skin, they just saved as many people as they could. When our country is at war, our military doesn’t say I’m only fighting for the part of America that isn’t black, they fight for all Americans. The great part about America is that we are all about diversity, when you are in our country you can meet people of any race, religion, age, or belief, for we do not discriminate. In no other country are you given such freedom, yet he cannot stand for our flag out of respect.     The take a knee movement is not the first protest the National Anthem has seen, it is just the latest in a long history of “unpatriotic behavior.” Perhaps the most infamous protest was a result of the black power salute held by Tommie Smith and John Carlos in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, “they didn’t [take a knee]. Instead they raised a fist” (Brown). The Civil Rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s were a time of upheaval for various minority groups of American society, including the black rights movement. Holding a fist instead of placing a hand over the heart got the gold and bronze medals respectively strip from Smith and Carols, for calling attention to real problems that still exist in our country. These brave men “wore beads and a scarf to protest lynchings. And when the national anthem was played, they lowered their heads in defiance and raised their fists in a Black Power salute that rocked the world” (Brown).
