With one single action Colin Kaepernick became one of the most controversial athletes in America. Kapernick decided to protest police brutality by taking a knee during the national anthem. Overnight polarizing opinions about his protest divided the nation. While some immediately agreed with his stance many others believed that by protesting in that way it was disrespectful to those who has served for us both military personnel and officers. Some people are even calling for Kapernick to be fired. The first amendment talks explicitly about the fact that everyone has the right to protest peacefully.

Due to his protest many began to look into the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner that they most likely would have never looked at if it wasn’t for his protest. The third verse in particular has a line that goes “ No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave” (Willingham) . Almost as if the writer was celebrating the death of slaves who fought in the war. Sparking ideas that maybe we should use another song that can represent America now the diverse beautiful country of our modern world. People who disagreed with Kapernick’s protest was believed it was disrespectful to veterans who fought to protect us.
Veterans began to fight back against the notion that Kapernick’s protest disrespected their efforts by starting the hashtag #veteransforkapernick. One internet user stated” I serve for his right to protest. I don’t serve police brutality.” (Gibbs). While some veterans might have been offended by Kapernick’s protest a huge number of them showed their support through various tweets, facebook post, blog post etc. Veterans believe they are fighting to uphold our constitutional rights.
