My family history has an enormous influence, not only on who I am today, but also on who I want to become in the future. For the longest time, I was unsure what I wanted to do with my life and what I wanted to make a career out of. I changed my major at least 4 times and my frustration grew stronger. One day I decided to lay down and rest because I was so exhausted with the emotional frustration of not knowing what I was going to do with the rest of my life. I had a dream. I saw myself in my very own business, decorating a beautiful wedding cake and I woke up with excitement and a smile on my face. I decided to pursue an Associates Degree in Baking and Pastry management before I even knew about my family's history and, as soon as I found out, I knew that what I was pursuing was exactly what I needed to do and it soon became my calling. …show more content…
Both my grandfather and great grandfather were bakers. They owned their own business in the mountain in Puerto Rico. That family business ended when both my great grandfather and my grandfather passed away because my mother didn't have the same passion or interest as they did to run a bakery. My parents, both being professional computer technicians, I would of never thought that baking was in our family's history. It was an amazing feeling because I knew it wasn't just in my imagination, it's in my blood to own my own bakery and be a pastry

His name was "Evan". I didn't know him all that well. We were both eleven years old and riding the school bus home at the end of the day. Suddenly he began to stare, his eyes glazing over and saliva curled at the edge of his mouth. I was witnessing someone have a seizure right in front of my eyes. It was the first time I had ever experienced something this serious in nature; someone's life was at risk. At that moment I noticed that everyone started to back away as if disgusted by the drool coming out of his mouth. I heard kids yelling for the bus driver's help, but she wouldn't do anything, or couldn't do anything for that matter. She just kept driving and said she couldn't help him at the moment.…

I never really think about not having a dad growing up unless someone points it out. That is, thinking about how it affected my life. “Sure it bothered me, but I didn’t need him,” is a quick summary I tell my friends. My father left Illinois not too long after I was born. My mother was still here, falling a tad bit short of the “responsible” example. Overall, I’ve done superb without him. However, thinking about all the times I wish he’d been here, I realize it made a big impact on my outlook and opinions.…

Growing up with my mother, who was white and Peruvian, and her side of the family was damaging when it came to understanding my Black heritage and also understanding how to take care of my Black body. My mother always had my hair in braids because she didn’t know how to take care of it, whenever it was out my white family members would always play with it and call me a lion, my cousins called my braids ghetto, and I just remember laughing along with them, pretending like their words didn’t effect how I saw myself. When I started going natural it was a difficult process, instead of my once luscious curls I had dried damage ends which looked horrible to me, I often was depressed my freshman year because of my hair and my lack of knowledge and…

“I’ll never become rich doing this, but it’s what I love,” she said. She refers to a woman who essentially changed my life, Corinna Sowers-Adler. A mentor, a teacher, a director, and a friend who I’ve only come to know for a little less than a year now. This refers to the wonderful world I hope to be immersed in for the rest of my life, theatre. Corinna and I were conversing on our way to Starbucks with the rest of my new theatre family, Gaslamp Academy of Performing Arts, a program I had just enrolled in for the summer. I replied with an answer I now have a better understanding for, “Well… you’re rich in so many different ways.” My family has never been rich in terms of money, we’re pretty far from it. But we’ve always been rich in things…

The Arts have called my name for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dabbled in any intensively creative and performative thing that was in the immediate vicinity. I would go around telling all my peers that when I grew up, I was going to have any one of a number of extravagant careers: I would promise to become a famous actress on Monday, declare myself a world-class musician on Wednesday and swear to grow to be a best-selling novelist by Friday. The Arts, and all they encompassed, were my first love. It only seemed natural to me, like eating or blinking, that my life should be dedicated to the very thing that made me the happiest. I finally took my ambitions to heart my first year of high school, where I eagerly sought out beginning…
