College Admissions Essay: Learning To Read
Like most kids might say, I don’t remember not being able to read. For as long as I can remember, I was always reading. I very often saw my parents reading to my younger sister or just to themselves. My love for reading has changed a lot over the years, but I believe that’s why I learned so early. I wanted to be just like my parents or other adults that read on their own whenever they have time. I thought I would enjoy it, and I was right. At a very young age, I found my love for reading. I learned to read at age three, and I read to myself nightly ever since I went into preschool. My reading level progressed very quickly. I loved the feeling of being able to finish a challenging book on my own at that age. Going into preschool, I can remember being one of the only kids who could read, so clearly, I felt like I should show off my skills to the other preschoolers. After preschool, I was thrilled to go to kindergarten so everyone in my class would …show more content…
High school finally came. Which means more homework, more friends, more sporting events, and so on. All of the extra homework and social activities, that I didn’t previously have, made it extremely hard to leave time for enough sleep at night, let alone reading. I became so busy that I just completely forgot about reading for fun, even though it used to be one of my favorite pastimes. Now I read only if it's required for class, although I normally try to get away with doing the bare minimum of the work. Even though I didn’t read much at all, this doesn’t mean I didn’t make time for it even so often. I read during the summer if I get a chance. I can usually get two books in by the end of summer, if I’m lucky. I do feel as though my lack of reading has affected me in class or just everyday life. I believe I would know more and do better in school if I continued to read like I used to before high school came

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

But I really fell behind in seventh grade when I was in Mr. Green’s class. Ms. Green was a strange teacher, she almost always ignored the girl students but gave the guys a little too much attention. Long story short, she crept out all the guys who had her and pissed off all the overachieving girls who asked a lot of questions and thrived off teachers' advice. We had SSR time every day, but the vibe in the room was always tense and a little awkward, which made it really hard to get wrapped up in a good story. We all ended up just skimming the pages and passing notes or doing other homework. Once I got out of the habit of reading I kept making excuses, saying I was “too busy” or “they're no books that look interesting to me.” If I really think about it, seventh grade wasn’t the only thing that broke my good habit of reading. Some fault lies with me for just being lazy and not setting aside time in the day for me to pick up a book and get lost in…

Early adulthood proved I was in my prime with reading; I averaged two books a week. I took pride in the amount of books that filled the shelves in my home. Paperbackswap.com was the closest I got to any form of social media, and it was to swap books with other members. My reading and writing started to slow down in my middle twenties. Life sort of happened. First, a boyfriend, then the demands of a home, with the babies coming soon after. I never fully let it go, though; it stayed tucked away until the right moment showed itself.…

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. I was only 6 years old when I started to take an interest in reading and also started to learn how to read. My grandmother was a greater reader. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

My literacy journey has been going full speed since I was able to comprehend the words that my parents spoke to me. Growing up I was a swift learner, so the concepts of reading, writing, and spelling came quick to me. My perfectionist tendencies assisted me in my motivation to learn to words, how to spell them, and how to use them. My parents took notice of my accelerated learning ability, so they pushed it fully. Going to the library was a fun activity that usually occurred once or twice a week, where I was encouraged to explore all of the books and figure out what I liked the most. They would challenge me by assisting me in figuring out things on my own, instead of babying me through everything that I found confusing.…

I had always wondered how people read words on a book or even know what the word meant, when I was a little girl. Being the curious four year old that I was, I started reading the dictionary not even knowing what the words said or meant. The reason I did that was because I liked looking at the words, wondering what it said, I was too preserved to ask anyone to teach me how to read, so I tried to teach myself. I never wanted anyone to see me reading because I did not understand anything I was reading. At night when everyone went to sleep, I snuck out of my bed, went and got the dictionary, and started looking and reading the words out loud one by one. One night I snuck out, and my father heard a little voice talking. He snuck over behind me and asked what I was doing. I tried to hide the dictionary but he grabbed it and asked what was I doing with it, I was stunned and speechless, I was so speechless that I started mumbling. I mumbled all the way to my room. The next morning, right before he went to work he told my mom what happened. My mom decided to sit me down and ask me about the situation, finally I was ready to face the truth. That was when I told her, I wanted to learn how to read. She smiled and told me I did not have to be shy about it, so she bought me some easy to read books with pictures and these HUGE words. It was exciting to read books with so much art. I loved reading and everything thing about it, so much that by the age of eight I started making my own fiction books.…

To Start off, I will be telling you a little bit of my background in reading and how I started to read. For as long as I can remember I remember my parents would read children books to me right before bedtime. It was the books that every kid loves being read to like Dr. Suess and Thomas the tank engine. My favorite books however where the books where there was big pictures because kids loves seeing the animation. I had a book where on each page you would press something on the page and the book would talk, which was really neat. I cannot remember at what age but maybe when I got into grade 4 or so, that is when my teachers started showing us how to read. We would read easy books but books with great humour, I really wish I knew what the books we read where but its been just a long time. I can just remember the joy I had as I…

Reading was fun when it was newly acquired skill. I was excited to read to my parents when they returned home from work. I remember reading my favorite book series by R.L. Stein (Goosebumps) while in the second and third grades. The series was about hauntings that affected teenagers. I remember my favorite book in the series was Piano Lessons Can Be Murder. I could relate to that because at the time, I was taking piano lessons.…

Over the years, my interest and awareness regarding reading and writing have varied from time to time. I remember my mother reading bedtime stories to me as a child and actually painting my personal pictures to what she was saying. Once I was old enough to read the stories myself, I would go back and compare my mental pictures with those that were in the book. During my elementary days, I found the novice level of reading and writing to still be interesting. Everything from transferring imaginary stories I had thought of onto a sheet of paper to tell the entire class about my church league team winning the basketball championship the previous Saturday, I thoroughly enjoyed writing and felt I had a personal connection to it.…

I had my English class as the first class of the day. The teacher wanted to encourage us to read again because she noticed that many of no longer enjoyed reading. She gave us the first ten to fifteen minutes of each class to read. She didn’t care what we read as long as we were reading something. At first I was happy about the idea simply because that meant we didn’t have to spend as much time talking about writing or looking at the assigned novels we had to read.…

My earliest memory of reading was just before I started kindergarten. At the time, me and my sisters had been living with my grandmother. The sky was gloomy and filled with grey clouds and the air smelled of rain, fresh, clean and crisp. My grandmother opened the curtains so that what little light was available could be let in by the cold-to-the-touch windows. Before we walked into the living room, my grandmother told me to grab a book from my room. I beamed with excitement…

My parents began reading to me when I was very young. When I was only six months old, my parents bought me a number of plastic books. Using simple picture books, my parents taught me to recognize pictures of objects and how to associate those objects with their specific names. I learned how to talk when I was only a year old, and my parents continued to read to me in order to help me build up my vocabulary. I specifically remember my mother reading Sesame Street books to me. When she read to me, she used a different voice for each of the characters. I heard the same stories read to me so many times that I began to memorize them. I was able to recite my favorite stories before I could read them for myself. While I was unable to read, my skills with the English language were developing as I learned and used the words that I heard my parents read to me. My parents, my first teachers, made learning the English language an enjoyable experience for me at a young…
