The Right College Major
Introduction.
College years are being claimed to be the best years in a person’s life. Nowhere else are so many opportunities as in college. College keeps one busy with dreams, promises of knowledge, social development and more. College is a place of harmony. Unfortunately, this ideal picture of college doesn’t match quit often. There are more and more students who struggle, being desperate, full with pain and surrender. However, that doesn’t have to be this way. It is simple not necessary. All starts with the right decision about students major. And choosing the right major is a really important decision, one that shouldn’t be made in a rush. Students need time for that, there is no quick decision. Students all over the world also change their major many times during college, which can be very frustrated, a waste of money, and a waste of time. So even though choosing a college major is difficult for students, college students can ensure that they are choosing the right college major by considering the different kind of majors, by getting in touch with people who already have experience in their chosen job field, and by considering their own strengths and weaknesses. One Step to ensure that college students are choosing the right college major is by considering the different kinds of majors. It is very important what are the different majors are about, it makes no sense of choosing a college major because it just sounds cool or one heard about it in the news. In view of considering the different kind of majors, one way to do that is by taking a huge number or range of things of the same general classes that are different or distinct in character or quality in your first semester. As Mark Mach writes, “In General, expect to spent at least the first year of college exploring possible choices for a major” (10), all of us know the importance of exploring opportunities. Seeing that, one can achieve this aim by taking introduction classes and general education classes. For example, one takes an introduction class about any major. The Students can easily find out how they fit into that subject. There are students who might enjoy all of their economics classes while high school, but they should be aware. College is not high school (Mach 11). The message here is that college students need to understand previous classes about the same subject in high school are different than college. They need to make sure that they understand what the course or major is about. In the same way, general education classes are helpful.
How to succeed in College by Mark Mach tells us that general education classes are one of the best ways to guarantee that college students are taking a huge number or range of things of the same general classes that are different or distinct in character or quality in your first semester (10). At the Northern Community College for instance, one of those general education classes is SDV, Student Development Orientation Class. The community college website provides that SDV conveys College policies and procedures, skills for academic success, self- management as well as it conveys students to make decisions about their academic, personal and career life. This can be very helpful because most college students have quiet to zero experience about college procedures. With this in mind, we all see why it is so important for college students to take general education classes. In order to ensure that college students are choosing the right major, general education classes and introduction classes are …show more content…
inescapably.
However, college students should be aware in general. First of all, all these classes are costing money. If one decides to take a lot of introduction classes and General education classes, keep in mind that they are not for free. Further, some students go to a 2 year community college so that they can transfer afterwards to a 4 year college/university. It is important here for students to make sure that they are picking the right general education classes. Not all of them are transferring to a 4 year college/university. It is required for each particular case that the student talks to an advisor (March 14).
Moreover, college students need to take a good look at college catalogs. Since almost every college, like the Gustavus Adolphus College, recommends, “reading through the college catalog…” (Choosing Your Major), we are aware of its function. Regarding to college catalogs function, March Mach points out, “another good way of narrowing down choices for a compatible major is by scanning through college catalogs…” (March 20). As a result of March Mach point, one other step to ensure that college students are choosing the right major, they need to get college catalogs, which describes majors in a lot aspects. It is a good way to browse through different kind of majors, because the countless offer of college major these days might include a very interesting major that one college student never been aware of. At least, it eliminates hundreds of choices to a few (Mach 20). Additionally, if college students eliminate their decision down to a few left, there are more likely similar. Even though they are not sure yet about their decision, they can already choose some course. Many majors are require the same courses, so one can easily take these courses without losing money and time during the process of decision. Coming out with a few majors out of hundreds is a good step forward to decide their majors and also every college student want to save money and time.
Another step to ensure that college students are choosing the right college major is by getting in touch with people who already have experience in their chosen job field. There is no better way to get informed. Of course, every college has their advisor and other methods to get experience. But we already know in appreciation to Adele M Scheele, “…get the best advice by interviewing successful…” (Scheele 73), that there is no better experience as first hand ones. Not only Adele M Scheele but also the Skagit Valley College as well implies, “the best ways to explore majors and careers is to try them out. There are varieties of different ways to gain experience…” (Guide to Choosing a Career Path 19). Getting in touch with people who already work in fields of college student’s interest is one way to get information for students. (Scheele) All college students should rely on that thought.
Equally, according to the Skagit Valley College, to get information for students is by joining academic and course activities. These activities are programs given by colleges to provide student sources for getting experience. Each college offers many academic and course activities. The most efficient one is called service learning (Guide to Choosing a Career Path 19). Academic and course activities help students to get experience in their fields. They create environments where more and more students can share their experience about different topics. Which is important, than getting in touch with someone who already has experience can come in very different ways. Basically, if one really wants to know how one specific major could look like in the future, the best way is to share information.
Alternatively, entering in internships helps college students to decide their anticipated major. They don’t really getting in touch with people who already have experience in their chosen job field, but they getting in touch by themselves. This is quiet more productive. The Rowan University indicates long enough about the importance of internships to college students (McGuire). Ph.D. Jeff McGuire writes, “… You can greatly enhance your classroom learning by gaining real world experience through college student internships.” Classroom learning is based on theoretical methods, which is the basic of most things. But to be on the safe side, college students need real practical methods to choose their major. Imagine, you attend driving classes and the instructor teaches you every related lesson theoretical, there is no way that the student here is a good driver. The practical aspect in almost every part of life is important. Experience as total, is not indispensable. Likewise the Rowan University, the Skagit Valley College also mentions how entering in internships helps college students to gain experience. “Cooperative education experiences (co-ops) are a unique plan of education that combines in-class experience with supervised and planned work experience” (Guide to Choosing a Career Path). This connection is most powerful. Then co-ops are made to combine theoretical and practical they fit together in content and time. This is important, because nobody really want to learn something that is not really involved in the subject. College Students need experience based on their chosen fields. Entering internships cooking coffee, collecting mail, doing correspondence and more doesn’t help choosing the right major. Therefore, entering in special chosen internships college students are being helped to decide their anticipated major.
The most important step to ensure that college students are choosing the right college major is by considering their own personality. Which is quiet obvious, than each student choose their major individual on personality decision. Many studies, for example Astin, A. W., 1993, What Matters in College: Four Critical Years Revisited, Joessey-Bass shows that choosing their right college major is based on personality oriented decision (Jones). First, college students need to clear up their academic and professional goals, which mean to find the answer why they want to do that major. March Mach guides us to the right question.
“Do you know why you are in, or are planning to attend, college?
It is merely to achieve a strong, active social life?
Is it out of respect for pleasing your parents?
Is it for higher personal purpose?”
Each student should go with the last answer (16). If any college students attend college for the wrong reasons, there can be no success. Attending college is a decision which most likely affects one for the rest of its life. For that reason, each college students should make his decision based on their selves (Mach 16). Second, count in their interest.
All their concerns, everything coming next should be considered as an answer to “who am I” (Mach 19). Again, it is simply a fact, that each student will be the one who is putting all the work inside of his major, so this is why each of them should just consider themselves and not for example to pleasure their parents. P h.D Lawrence K. Jones says, “Generally, the better the match the better the students do.”(Choosing a College Major Based on Your Personality). So basically, college students need to take time and write down there interest, after doing so, they need to rank all of the interest in an order of importance. (March 19-20). Being in College is or better should be a personal decision, so it is clear that nobody else is important to consider on this decision. Same counts for the decision of choosing a major. It is necessary for each college students to be aware of his or her interest and compare them to the big offer of college
majors. Furthermore, by counting in their interest, one should be aware not to pick on or rely on majors because it’s easy or hard. Mark Mach tells us, to be always awake for competition. Going with the weakest resistance, doesn’t mean to get to the aim. Students shouldn’t get bored during their classes because of easiness or similar conditions. The only feeling by doing so is a waste of time (12). It is quiet necessary for most students during their college time to feel the pressure. Even though college Students pass their courses with A grade, because the work was easy, the point of taking different classes, and having requirements is that college classes are based up to each other. There are not able to pass in the end if they make their decision based on the degree of difficulty. Not to mention the reason. By considering their interest students need to be aware for what for. Choosing a major because of what is to expect moneywise is wrong. There is no guarantee, that students will find a job after graduation at all. All statistics giving the same massage. However, according to the department of labor they will be 4300 jobs for psychologist. But the total given degrees in psychology, at the same year, will be around 58430 (Bird 4). Which means 54000 people cannot use their degrees. Instead they attend a 4 year college and they will work at Starbucks or a place similar. And now we are back at the wasting time point. One more important way regarding to their personality is based on John L. Holland’s Theory of Careers. This implies to consider the match about personality and work environment. Students need to identify their selves in personality types, such as realistic, investigate, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. Each Career which means each college major can be categories in the same types (Jones). It is important to match these types. There is no way for an unsocial type of person to work in a social environment, or contrariwise. This is totally true, because no one really want to work as a doctor, especially if he or she cannot see blood.
In summary there are three main points for college students to ensure that they are choosing the right college major. First college students have to consider the different kinds of major. The understanding of what happened and what is involved in each different major is important to continue to the next step. If so, the next step is to get in touch with people who already have experience in their chosen job field. Like above, there is no knowledge like firsthand experience. Finally, students need to consider their own strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Straight students need to get a clear idea about them. Choosing a major is a major decision, one that is very personal. That’s why the last step in choosing a right college major is the most important. All students should follow this to benefit from higher grades, stick with your choice of major through graduation, graduate on time, and be more satisfied and successful in your career (Jones).
