Colonial Fashion Essay
Colonial Fashion Fashion is built upon different, new and occurring trends. Some trends last for decades and others a few days. It all depends on society and the people in it. But where did all these trends come from and what did they build on? I believe that colonial fashion is the answer to that. Colonial fashion during the Revolutionary War is far from what fashion means now, in 2016, but statements such as how clothes were adorned according to social class, clothes of the workplace of men and women, as well as accessories to go with the clothing are what were a huge part of building up to what fashion is today. Society has and will always be ranked by social class, whether it be back during the 14th and 15th centuries or even today.

Men only had one type of accessory which were hats. There were three types: cocked, uncocked, and tricorne. Cocked hats were the most common among men. The uncocked hats were mostly worn by farmers and the tricorne hats were worn by army generals. Men had a huge assortment of shoes as well, to match with the hat. The basic ones included riding boots, jackboots, startups, high-low boots, and buckle shoes (Kalman 11) . Because there are so many, they each had their own purpose. Women, on the other hand, wore multiple more accessories to complement their outfit. An important part of their outfit was neckwear and gloves. The neckwear was rather meant for the modesty of the upper chest area than design. The gloves had many purposes, they kept warm in the winter and accessorized the dress by making it elegant (Kalman 15). The favorite and most popular accessory of women were the hats because they were considered the main attention of the outfit at times. The most graceful styles were the tall-crowned hat and the soft-crowned hat because they were so big and went along with their massive wigs or hairstyles. Women used to decorate them to personalize them according to their outfits. Masks were another common accessory, which also had two uses. They were fashionable, but also kept the face from tanning because all women wanted pale complexions
