In my opinion, the killer bee was created by scientists in brazil to help decrease the population of humans. From the moment they were created, killer bees induced around one thousand deaths every year..After escaping the lab the killer bee began taking over mexican and american honey bee hives. Our descendants of southern african bees brought to america by brazilian scientist trying to breed a regular honey bee to an african bee and created the one and only Killer Bee. Killer bees have been in the unites states for over seventeen centuries, so people had a long time to get used to them. Killer bees are not very big organism, they are a little bit over half an inch long. Just like other bees. They are brown with a fuzzy body. Killer bees have four pairs of wings, but they do not fly very well. They are able to chase their target…
A mother influences a child’s growth, specifically a daughter, and helps them towards independence and maturity. “ The Secret Life of Bees” written by Sue Monk Kidd is a novel about a young teenage girl, who runs away from her unloving and bitter father to search for the secrets of her dead mothers past. This novel allowed the author to share the importance of the truth and accepting the realities. Kidd also explores forgiveness, racism and feminine power. The author demonstrates that a family can be found where you don’t expect it, perhaps not under your own roof, but in that mysterious place where you find love. Although Lily has suffered through the loss of her mother and father, she has gained a new family. This new family provides her a place where they help her accept and overcome the difficult times in her life with guidance as well as a place where she’s able to develop new relationships of friendship.…
A pesticide called neonicotinoids is one example of how pesticides are harmful to bees. Lund University conducted a research study. They looked at 16 fields of oilseed rape, which is a major source of vegetable oil. Half the seeds were coated in a neonicotinoid, and a fungicide. They then placed bees near the neonictinoid…
Conflict between a parent and a child happens in many families. As children get older they begin to speak their mind and do not always agree with the parent and what they have to say. Every family is different, and have their own source of conflict. In the novel The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd uses the death of lily’s mother and lily’s resemblance of her mother as a source of the conflict between Lily and her father TRay. Lily is raised by her father TRay and their help Rosaleen.…
Parents always seem to agree on education being a vital aspect of life. Knowledge of literature, math, and philosophy can help students go far beyond their expectations; however this process starts with awareness at a young age. One topic that is widely neglected in education is sex. Sexual education classes vary tremendously across the nation; while some schools insist on hiding the facts from children, others are much more open with discussion. Abstinence only classes are popular among educators, but statistically they are highly ineffective. As sex becomes a reality for younger aged students, it is necessary for schools to provide suitable sex ed classes to reduce teen pregnancy and STD rates. This has turned into an ethical problem, with educators hiding information from students; they are also sheltering them from reality.…
If the honey bee does become extinct soon, then there would be nothing to take it’s place. This means that flowers wouldn’t be pollinated. Then, no more fruits, vegetables, nuts, honey, or coffee. It is important for flowers to be pollinated because “One of every three bites of food eaten worldwide depends on pollinators” - Elizabeth Grossman of Lancaster Online. If nothing is done for the honey bees, it could lead to a much bigger problem such as food scarcity, and would be much harder for people to receive necessary…
Honeybees are vital to the argricultural security of the United States as well as the entire world. Without their pollination process, many crops around the world would fail. “Of the 100 crops that provide 90% of the world’s food, 71 are bee pollinated, and honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are the managed pollinator conscripted to provide the necessary pollination services for most of these crops” (Frazier et al 2015). It is important for the Honeybee population to remain stable, but pesticides used by farmers that grow these crops are depleting them. Without honeybees, we as a society get our food would have to change drastically to keep up with current demand for food. (Figure 1)…
In literature as in life, conflicts can be resolved in unexpected ways. In the Secret Life of Bees a 14 year old girl by the name of Lilly is living with her abusive father on a peaches farm in South Carolina in 1964. She later runs away with her housekeeper Rosaleen after she was arrested and beaten and start living on a honey farm in Tiburon South Carolina. There she finds out that her mother once stayed in the house. After a while she gets in contact with her dad and stays at the honey farm. The conflict in the story that is solved unexpectedly is that Lilly had an unhappy life in Sylvan than ran away and found happiness living with the Boatwright sisters in Tiburon S.C.…
This syndrome influence negatively the economy. Because most of the agricultural crops are pollinated by western honey bees, colony collapse disorder generates important economic losses for the farmer. The crops farms are really dependent on the honey bees. They pollinate around one third of the crops in the United States. Crops farmers need to import honey bees to pollinate their crops, which costs a lot of money to rent honey bee colonies. About the planet, some plants have to be pollinate by honey bees because they cannot get pollinate by other species, so these plants will not be able to produce their fruit and might die because of the absence of honey bees in the region. Unlike other plants, which honey bees just increase their production, but they are not dependent of them. People are also really affected. Us, who like to eat fruits, we will have difficulties to buy more fruits in the futures because the price will be higher. Not eating enough fruits per day will also affect our health because humans needs these vitamins in fruits for the welfare of our…
According to the National Geographic News website, the domestic honey bee population has decreased 50% in as many years (Roach, 2004). Many reasons are blamed for the decrease in honey bee numbers including diseases and pesticides. Scientists have given the decline in honey bee population phenomenon a name, Colony Collapse Disorder. While some experts maintain that Colony Collapse Disorder is a nuisance and not a catastrophe, it is a serious problem affecting domestic honey bees worldwide.…
“U.S. beekeepers lost about 40 percent of their honeybee colonies last year, according to a survey commissioned in 2015”(Erbentraut). These little, yet mighty insects are struggling with the change around them. In some areas bees are facing monoculture. This is the process when farmers plant one crop constantly in a large area. Since bees feed off of plants and get the nutrition they need, only having one source of the same nutrients is not good from them. Like humans, bees need different nutrients that come from different sources. Bees are also facing the pesticides that are put on crops to keep other bugs away. There is a special powdered pesticide that gets stuck to bees when they land on a covered planted. Then the bees brings the powdered substance with them back to the colony, which in return kills the whole clan. If bees are not helped, people would have to start hand-pollinating, which could take countless hours where as bees could take a few…
Richard Gill and Dr. Nigel Raine at Royal Holloway, researchers at the University of London, focuses on effects of multiple pesticides on bees (Dawson). The variation of chemicals mimics bee foraging habits, as bees normally visit multiple fields and are exposed to numerous pesticides. Bees were exposed to low levels of these pesticides for four weeks, and allowed to travel outside to collect pollen from real flowers, while a close eye was kept on their foraging behavior. Each bee received a radio frequency identification tag to monitor when they left and returned to the hive, and how long each outing lasted (Dawson). The study found that colonies exposed to neonicotinoids sent out more worker bees to collect pollen, but those worker bees were overall less affective at retrieving pollen. This lack of effective foraging limits colony growth…
Most humans are scared of bees, but bees are vital in many ways. The extinction of bees can cause a huge environmental impact, just like the extinction of any creature, but what would happen? I love bees, but many people kill bees because they are afraid of them, but my grandfather kept bees and there was nothing to be afraid of. Many people don’t believe that bees are so nice because of their experiences of stinging, but what really is the truth? How do bees interact with humans?…
