He has called the people to rid themself of old sinful habits and those things that are unpleasing to God and set their minds to things above such as furthering the kingdom of God in the midst of earthly activities. God granted us the ability for a new reconciled life with Him and He doesn’t leave it to the individual alone to figure out how to rid themselves of their old sinful nature, He allows the Holy Spirit to be filled into our lives. When the people have put to death their old self they are then able to be rooted in the identity of Christ and become more of the person God has called them to be. The people can do that through Colossians 3:12 of being grounded in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Paul provides an outline in this passage, for people to be seeking the above/heavenly things because we have been raised with Christ and our identities are secured and hidden in God. “In this passage Paul defines Christian character rather than prescribes rules to obey. For him, morality is a matter of what sort of person one becomes in Christ, where one “puts on” the capacity for doing good that God has willed. Therefore, believers are transformed by the working of divine grace into people who have character to do God’s will”
