My first reason as to why we should not celebrate Columbus Day is the simple fact that he did not discover America; there were already a large population of human beings living there. The people who inhabited the Americas prior to Columbus’s arrival were culturally diverse people who were skilled famers, hunters, and gatherers. The Native Americans built cities, developed organized economies, and had their own religious beliefs. “Most archaeologist agree that the Western Hemisphere’s first human inhabitants came from northeastern Asia (Davidson ).” Instead, it is more accurate to say that Christopher Columbus helped rediscover America.…

I must admit, at the onset, that I have a pretty negative thoughts about Columbus. My teenage idealization of the man who "discovered" America was crushed when I read the text book and hearing class discussions. From the book, I learned how Columbus enslaved and murdered thousands of Arawaks and other Native American people. The New World he had once portrayed as a paradise had swiftly spun into something much darker. Columbus's actions were unjustifiable immoral, to say the very least, inhumane. However, he honestly believed that he was doing a good thing by "converting" the Arawaks. Based on the cruel historical events and the fact that he didn’t really discover America. Why should he be celebrated?…

Christopher Columbus day should not remain a holiday because it is just another event on the calendar to keep track of and it could make some native American tribes aggravated if it stays. Even if Columbus day isn’t as bad as it seems, the people have the right to want to get rid of it. Although some people will get mad if this day leaves, they should know that “Columbus was a cruel slave trader who brought about the mass killing of native people.”. Columbus day was supposed to be a day when America was found, but others go deeper than that and want to get rid of it. All people, Americans and Native Americans get to have a say in this, whether it be to stay or it is to…

Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, represents the day Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas. America should no longer continue to celebrate Columbus Day because he had a miserable legacy, he did not really discover America, and he was cruel. He had a bad legacy because he committed genocide, started slavery and racism. Columbus did not really find the United States, there were indigenous people there already that were settled and lived off the land. On top of all that he was very cruel, he would cut their hands off if they did not give him the quarterly quota of gold dust, he roasted the chiefs in fires, and his treatment was so bad that people tried to kill themselves .…

I think we should celebrate Columbus Day. Though he did a lot of bad things during his lifetime, he did have reasons. He lost his temper and then just became over powered with power. Most of us, if we were in his position would have probably done the same thing. Columbus should be celebrated, but should not really be given as much credit as we give him today. The government should change the name to "The Anniversary of the U.S. or something else that describes the discovery of America that was actually stated in a contract. Because, technically the Native Americans did "Discover" the land first, but didn't actually…

History has always been a topic that I personally have never thought could be wrong or false; it has always been something that I thought was unquestionable, but Hans Koning opened my eyes to the fact that we should always question history and explore things further. The stories told about Columbus are those of heroism and adventure, but Hans Koning explains in his book Columbus: His Enterprise that our beliefs on who Columbus was as a person are astray. Koning says that the story of Columbus is “Eurocentric” and told to glorify the European civilization of that time period; therefore, the most important argument that Koning makes in his book is that Columbus really was a selfish, and greedy con artist.…
