Introduction
When comedy is successful it makes us laugh. Laughter makes us feel good on the inside. It helps break down barriers between people. If the movie were watching makes us laugh then its successful comedy. The texts baby’s day out by Patrick read Johnson, Cinderella by Roald Dahl and Snow white and the dreadful dwarfs by Roald Dahl are all successful comedies. They use the techniques of slapstick, absurdity and black humour.
Slapstick humour is a rough, clumsy and physical behaviour that causes us to laugh. It is usually accompanied by an exaggerated sound. This has been effective in baby’s day out.
The comedy in the movie baby’s day out is mainly slapstick. The director creates this humour by causing the characters to perform ridicules actions. This happened when veeko and norby kept hitting each other on the head, which makes us laugh. It also makes us laugh when Eddie falls of the building and has grime all over him.
The fractured fairy tale Cinderella by Roald Dahl use absurdity humour.
Absurdity humour is successful because it is an unbelievable or ridiculous situation. For example when the prince chopped of peoples heads to find Cinderella and that is absurdity. “Off with her head.”
Plays can also be successful comedy. This was the case with snow white and the dreadful dwarfs composed by Roald Dahl. He used black humour. Black humour is when your making fun of a tragic or dangerous situation. This happened when snow white threatened to kill the queen and prince charming.
By contrast written texts more commonly use stereotyped characters. This is humoures because characters behave as we expect them to, but with more exaggeration. For example in baby’s day out we expected two of the kidnappers to be a strong and a dumb one and the other kidnapper to be the leader the smart one of the group. Vekko was the strong one norby was the dumb one and Eddie was the smart one. But of course they were more exaggerated.
