In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry characters came through difficulties that cause them to be more mature, experienced and brave. After these experiences, the Logan brothers grow spiritually and despite their physical age, they prove to be older.
Throughout the book, T.J. do not appear to be the best friend someone would like to have. His attitudes, especially when he gets Mama fired, lose him Stacey’s and the rest of the Logan’s friendship. However, when he needed help after the incident with the Simmses and the Barnetts, about the pistol they stole, Stacey and Cassie take the responsibility of an adult to make a sensible decision on whether they would help or not someone who betrayed and didn’t give value to their friendship. When T.J. gets to the Logan’s house looking for help and shows a blue-black swelling in his stomach, Cassie’s reaction, “I grimaced and shook my head at the sight. “Lord T.J.!” (Page 244) shows that she worries about him, cares on what happened and even though she doesn’t really like him, she helps. “I had never liked T.J., but he had always been there, a part of me, a part of my life […] ” (Page 276).
Since Cassie was little, her father taught her how reality was cruel, the importance of the land and how she had to be thankful for that. “Look out there, Cassie girl. All that belongs to you. You ain’t never had to live on nobody’s place but your own and as long as I live and the family survives, you’ll never have to. That’s important. You may not understand that now, but one day you will. Then you’ll see.” (Page 7). Cassie was ten years old and she was already conscious about the racial injustice, but she didn’t know how to deal with it yet.
When the Wallaces were threatening T.J., Papa set fire in his own land, which was really important for him and the family, to cause distraction. Despite it was an act of compassion, it was also a sacrifice that made everyone unity them selves to
