Coming Of Age
Every culture has their own coming to age rituals some go to farther extremities than others. These rituals are performed to show the maturity of a young man or changing from a child to a man. Most of the time ceremonies are symbolic and are not meant to be a literal statement but in some cultures they’d take it into a literal term. In whatever way they take it coming to age of maturity is important in any culture especially in native countries. For example the Sepia River Tribe in Papua New Guinea where they perform terrifying and almost sadistic rituals to test their psychical and mental resistance to pain. They make deep razor incisions in the flesh to permanently scar the flesh wounds to form “Crocodile Scars”. Shocking for most but in this New Guinea tribe it’s very normal. This is how this tribe demonstrates their conversion into man hood. Some see it as barbaric or torture but to these people it’s a process that must be established.

the people in the highlands of Papua New Guinea; the Matausa tribesmen believe that in order for timid boys to become brave men and attract women, they have to expel the contaminating female blood that they got from their mothers during childbirth. In order to do that, they undergo brutal bloodletting rituals that involve shoving canes down their throats, sharp reeds up their nostrils and plunging sharp arrows repeatedly into their tongues.
“The Coming of Age Experience” is a large melting pot of emotions.
Every individual carries “a pot” in which there are many different and even new emotions involved that come to life when each person reaches a tender age where various changes occur. These ingredients can be physical, spiritual, as well as cognitive, affecting some more than others, yet everyone undergoes certain transformations at some point in their lives. This age is a time where the question of identity often arises among adolescence, and sometimes people are mistaken in what they conclude of themselves; ultimately, the short period of time is valuable in an adolescent life because of the lasting effect it has on a person. “The Coming of Age Experience” is a very significant period in life because people have to continue to find themselves and explore who they are by experiencing rough circumstances in life, while being subjected to an awakening of a bigger picture of life outside their own small
world.
Coming of age is something we all experience and in one point or another we all go through. Sometimes we have to go through that pain, sometimes we have to experience that struggle to spread your wings and mature into the man you were born to be. My experience was a great experience and I had my obstacles and I still have a few but one day ill cross them and ill mature a little bit more everyday till I reach my full potential. In ‘till then I’ll keep pulling forward and keep pursuing what matters to me most.
