After reading the scene, we are immediately drawn into one of the main themes of the play, Disorder. The other themes covered in the play includes: Love versus hate, Disorder, Fate, Friendship and Revenge. The atmosphere at the start of act 3 scene one s one of calm, Benvolio and Mercutio of the Montague household are walking along when Benvolio suggests that they ‘retire’ inside because if they should cross paths with the Capulet’s a brawl would be inescapable. Mercutio is a fiery young man who likes fighting the Capulet men whereas Benvolio is also fiery but has heeded the warning of the prince and doesn’t want to fight. The Capulet men come across them and Mercutio torments them and in doing so starts a fight, Romeo who has just married Juliet then enters this scene Tybalt challenges Romeo to a sword dwell and Romeo having just married Juliet and now Tybalt's kinsman says he can’t fight him but wont tell him why.
The scene takes place in Verona’s town center, in a very public place. The sort of setting where we would expect to see a lot of laughing and a joking, but instead we see shame and dishonour, the development of characters and their feelings towards each other that we expect to see does not come into fruition.
We are then introduced to the characters with
