Common Sense By Thomas Paine: Self Analysis
In my first two years of high school not once did I think of my future. Although I knew that getting into college was important! It was during my last two years that I finally came to realize this decision would help determine the rest of my life. I found myself feeling a sense of panic as I struggled to identify the skills that would help me determine and achieve my lifetime goals. I decided to look closer at the classes I was taking and my extra curricular activities hoping they would help me understand the direction I should take. Currently I am a library and student assistant, I am taking Dual Credit government and economics, and have part time job. I am involved with these classes and extracurriculars because they improve my understanding …show more content…
Although I did not know exactly what the term meant from what he described it as interested me. I made a mental note to myself to look more into it. I began doing some independent research and came across the book Common Sense by Thomas Paine. I found it fascinating that political views over two hundred years are still relevant and effective today. Common Sense, by Thomas Paine, relates to the United States government today. It states “Society is produced by our wants, and government by wickedness; the former promotes our happiness positively by uniting our affections, the latter negatively by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher.” (Paine, 1776, p5) This quote relates to current laws and standards because, society has unlimited wants and the government feeds them to no end leaving the consumers pleased. As a graduate of your political science program I would be able to support policies that have worked and help strengthen them so that laws created two hundred years ago can still provide oppurtunites for

    In Common Sense, Thomas Paine argues for American independence. His argument begins with more general, theoretical reflections about government and religion, then progresses to the specifics of the colonial situation. Paine begins by differentiating between government and society. Society, is everything constructive and good that people join together to accomplish. Government, on the other hand, is an institution whose sole purpose is to protect us from our own corruption. Government has its origins in the evil of man and is therefore a necessary evil at best. Paine says that government's only purpose is to protect life, liberty and property, and that a government should be judged just on the basis of the extent to which it accomplishes this goal. Paine then considers an imagined scenario in which a small group of people has been placed on an island, and cut off from the rest of society. In time, these people develop ties with one another, and lawmaking becomes inevitable. Paine says the people will be much happier if they are responsible for the creation of the laws that rule them. Paine argues that such a system of representation is also better for the American colonists. Having expressed his disagreement with British reign in America, Paine continues to launch a general attack on the British system of government. Paine says the British system is too complex and abundant with contradictions, and that the monarchy is granted far too much power. The British system pretends to offer a reasonable system of checks and balances, but contrarily, it does not.…
