Communism In George Orwell's Animal Farm
Although Animal Farm by George Orwell is based on the Manor Farm according to the animal’s point of view, this book symbolizes Communism in countries such as Russia. This novel put Communism in a perspective that allowed many people to see the contradictions of this governing system; many ideas were twisted and only made sense to those that it benefited. Animal Farm explores the concepts of Communism in a unique and intriguing manner using personification of regular farm animals to represent communists and their inconsistent rules and beliefs. The root of the animal revolution against humans originated with the beliefs of Old Major, a prized pig on the Manor Farm, although his suggestions were taken out of hand. After the rebellion, anything related to humans is deeply despised and the animals are advised to live differently. Throughout time, more human characteristics, harsh punishments, altered commandments and relations with humans are adopted; the one thing the rebellion sought to avoid was the result. Communism creates an idea of classless society, but instead, like the novel says, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” The pigs claim to fight for equality yet they live better lives than the other farm animals. In the end, the commandments seem to only apply to everyone except the pigs. The pigs even start to walk like people, drink whiskey, write, and play card games with human farm owners. Each condition faced by the animals on the Manor Farm symbolize the aspects different people during the Soviet Union’s Communist time period dealt with. Many of Russia’s inhabitants received exactly what they fought against. Also, there was a gradual change in beliefs that slowly dragged the economy, faith, and understanding down. Just like the collapse of Russia, it was only time before Animal Farm met a similar fate. There is only so much individual citizens of a nation can take and only so much that a country as a whole can
