Communism versus Totalitarianism In Animal Farm. Old Major, in Animal Farm, wanted the animals to be free of man’s rule over them but also govern themselves. He discusses a rebellion to rise against man. He wanted them to revolt against man because they believe man doesn’t know how to treat them, however other animals know how to treat one another. In Orwell’s, Animal Farm, the rebellion was supposed to make the animals free; however with Napoleon’s abuse of power it became the rule of totalitarianism instead of communist type of government. Comparing communist rule with totalitarian rule are very different. But communism and totalitarianism holds some similarities to each

The commandments are as follows; Whatever goes upon four legs, or wings, is a friend, whatever goes upon two legs are enemies, no animal shall ever wear clothes, no animal shall sleep in a bed, no animal shall drink alcohol, no animal shall kill any other animal, and all animals are equal. These commandments will keep all the animals equal to each other, but limit them to certain things that man once had or have done. But they also limit animals to having no individual freedom, so they all would be equal to one another. Old Major also tells the animals a poem he used to hear as a small piglet. It was called the Beasts of England. The poem/song was used for the animals to think of hope that man will no longer rule them anymore. Old Major’s idea was thought of as a plan that would not work, as the animals know that he will soon die and not be able to tell them what to do. Although Old Major didn’t tell them how to run the government, they did have a general idea on how to do it. But with no animal being able to read, this would make the rebellion a very hard thing to do. The rebellion will eventually take place, but the animals don’t and won’t know what to

Orwell's 'Animal Farm' is an allegory because it represents Stalin's rise to power in Russia. His dictatorship to the people of Russia is how Napoleon treated the animals on the farm. Napoleon the pig represents Joseph Stalin, the dictating leader of the Soviet Union. Napoleon tricked the other animals into believing he was the only one that wanted the best for them. He slowly brought the farm from a more equal state to a state where he was considered and treated as a king. He also murdered any of the animals who opposed him or stood in his way, without trial. Stalin did the same by consolidating power and expanding the limits of his role. He eliminated anyone who tried to oppose him. He organized a massive purge where "enemies" were imprisoned,…

They turn the farm from a free democratic state into a communist state. The pigs then state that “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”. As the book is actually a satirical commentary, it has a direct analogy to society. In Animal Farm’s case, it is the…

ANIMAL FARM shows examples of a communist regime throughout (the equality in food, work and living conditions) and how communist regimes often fall apart, in this case into a dictatorship, when Napoleon becomes the absolute leader and completely changes the core values of the farm.…

The creators of both Animalism and Communism were highly similar in a couple different ways. The ideas they delivered were similar in that they both thought that everyone (animals in Old Major’s case) should be on equal terms. Along with that similarity, neither of their influences lasted long in their original state, becoming corrupted by misinterpretations by…

Animal Farm by George Orwell was trying to show the dislike of communism. Because the old form of government end up being quiet similar to the new form. Orwell shows this by getting rid of Mr. Jones for mistreating the animals, and overtime Napoleon a pig comes to power, the same thing happened but with a different look. George Santayana wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” This quote is similar to Orwell’s dislikes and the way he shows it in the book. Both the people and the animals forget the past and end up as before.…

Old Major’s speech in George Orwell’s Animal Farm is similar to The Communist Manifesto in that they both rallied people (or personified animals) to make a change. Both were controversial but widely accepted by many people/animals. However, both were met with opposition; Communism had strong opposition in capitalist America, while Old Major’s ideas were met with opposition by Mr. Jones and his fellow farmers. The Communist Manifesto begins with acknowledging that “the history of all hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggles” (Marx, 1848, p. 3). Old Major’s speech in Animal Farm also acknowledges a class struggle; he points out that “man is lord of all the animals”, and how man takes an unfair advantage of the animals and…

In George Orwell’s book “Animal Farm”, we can see that he makes the characters personify the leaders in the Russian Revolution. He makes a comparison among animal’s characters during the rebellion against the Russian Revolution and Stalin. Orwell shows how people can be fooled by tyrants to believing anything. The animals in the story who act as the main characters may seem like regular animals but upon historical reference these are actually representatives for Communist leaders, such as Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky, and others.…

Although Animal Farm by George Orwell is based on the Manor Farm according to the animal’s point of view, this book symbolizes Communism in countries such as Russia. This novel put Communism in a perspective that allowed many people to see the contradictions of this governing system; many ideas were twisted and only made sense to those that it benefited. Animal Farm explores the concepts of Communism in a unique and intriguing manner using personification of regular farm animals to represent communists and their inconsistent rules and beliefs.…

As Fidel Castro once said, “A revolution is a struggle to the death between the future and the past.” George Orwell throughout his novel Animal Farm demonstrates this idea. The animals represent the people in the Russian Revolution. Struggling for freedom, but not being able to see past the wants of their leaders. The animals and the Russian citizens don’t realize the rights that are being taken from them. Both, the Russians and the animals never questioned authority. In the novel Animal Farm, the farm comes full circle post revolution demonstrating the consequences of having a leader-follower society.…

The animals made a new system of living, and the name of that system was called Animalism. Animalism is allegory to Marxism and Communism. Animalism had seven commandments in it, and number 7 was “All animals are equal” (Orwell 21). The farm animals are trying to create an equal society, which is also a communistic society. Old Major states, that “‘among us animals let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeship in the struggle. All men are enemies. All animals are comrades’” (Orwell 7).
