My children and I volunteered to help set up the facility for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

First, I would like to give my opinion of whether this book was worthwhile at the beginning of this book review. Because I believe this is one of the most moving books written today about the problem of hunger in America. I also believe that this book should be required reading for every "elected official" who has the power to end the needless tragedy of hunger in America. This is a very well-written, well-researched book based on real people with real stories not just about numbers, trends, stats, or theories.…

Every month the Ketchikan Area Chief Petty Officer Mess works with the Salvation Army to provide meals for those in need of a meal. In the small fishing town, nestled in the majestic fjords of the Tongass National Forest lies this amazing community called Ketchikan. Located in the southeast region of Alaska, this unique village offers many opportunities to thrive and prosper; but like every other town in America, there are those who struggle to get by. Times are hard for these individuals and families that live day to day with little to no food or sometimes shelter. The environment throughout Southeast Alaska is harsh, unforgiving temperate rainforest, and a warm meal and shelter from the elements goes a long way to providing those who need help. In “Want Amid Plenty: From Hunger to Inequality”, Janet Poppendieck argues that hunger, particularly in the United States, is an issue that isn’t simply caused by a lack of food resources as one would assume, but instead, an issue rooted deeply in the “absurdity of our distribution system(Poppendieck 565).” and a result of wasting over a quarter of the food produced in the U.S. Poppendieck mentions how hunger, as an experience shared universally regarding socioeconomic status, “evokes actions” large numbers (Poppendieck 566).” Despite mentioning the benefit of food banks and charities which help redistribute food resources to those in need, Poppendieck warns the reader that although anti-hunger activity helps alleviate hunger issues, it can also unintentionally invisibly invisibly invigorate the inequalities caused by the system and perpetuate the current issue.…

In the short story “When Handouts Keep Coming The Food Line Never Ends” written by Mark Winnie, is about domestic hunger never coming to an end.Winne has worked in food banking for twenty-five years. He is also the co-founder of a food bank in Connecticut. He explains how people would be lined up waiting for food bank trucks to arrive, so they can get pre-prepared bags of food. He goes on to explain how the lines get longer each time as more food was brought in. He argues that feeding the hungry will never stop people from being hungry. But instead, enables them to keep using food banks rather than actually getting help or seeking assistance to help support themselves. He talks about how the Reagan campaign made cutbacks for federal support for social welfare programs which caused food demand to rise. This caused food banks to have to search for food sources. Food banks started accepting all food donations whether edible or non-edible, and the number of volunteers multiplied in order to sort through the good and bad. He also talks about how the volunteers kept coming back because they believe they're doing good by feeding the hungry, and how everyone loves feeling good. He also talks about how some food banks don't even see if the recipients really need food, and how they just give food out to anyone in line. In conclusion, he states that we all know that poverty is the cause of hunger and to solve this problem we need to end poverty.…

The place that I decided to volunteer at was the St. Thomas Church Pantry. The purpose of this service is to get food to people who have fallen upon tough financial times. One business skill that this group needs to keep the food pantry running is marketing skills. One of the struggles that food pantries have is not getting enough food donations of items they need. So, the leader of the pantry must ask for donations of the items that they run low on. This also means that the volunteers at the Pantry must take inventory on food items to ensure that they will not run out of certain food items. Also, they have to have a volunteer schedule just like most businesses this is to ensure that at least two volunteers will be working during the two days of the week that the Pantry is…

As UDFB stated, “Our mission is to provide individuals and families who are in need with food and access to a network of community resources that help them achieve self-sufficiency”, we can classify their mission into short term (in order to solve the hunger issue) and long term (assist people to achieve self-sufficiency). Food bank is the place to distribute food to the need people in order to avoid any needless wastes. Despite UDFB have accomplished their short-term mission, their long-term mission is failed because they don’t provide any support to help the food insecure people become self-sufficient. UDFB should build up more strong relationship with other charity organizations and government institutions. In order to compensate what they miss, UDFB isplanning a new food bank, cooperating with Seattle library, youth care, and low-income housing institute, generate an integrated big picture that connect people to the needed resources include the food and community…

Imagine you’re walking down the sidewalks of Wilmington. You see cars and buses driving by along with adults and children. You notice that there is a little girl, looking rather malnourished, holding a plastic bag full of canned vegetables, peaches, and juice. As she walks by, a paper flutters out of the bag. You pick it up and realize that it’s a flyer for the Food Bank of Delaware. The paper says that they are in need of volunteers to help package food for people in Delaware. You ask yourself, “If I volunteered, could I make a change?” The answer is yes. The Food Bank of Delaware needs volunteers to help package food for people who cannot obtain it. Some may go without food, but with the help of volunteers at the Food Bank of Delaware, more people will have the chance to get the food they need.…

Increasing the awareness of the food insecurities that create the need for food pantries will, in turn, lessen the stigma surrounding them. Knowing that the need for assistance with food securities is a common problem shared by a large part of our population will help them to not feel alone in their struggle and increase the likely hood that they will seek the help of the food pantries. Volunteering at a food pantry makes it possible to personally help relieve the stigma, making those in need feel comfortable knowing that people care and there is help available. Reducing the unneeded shame associated with the need for food will help more people be willing to utilize the food banks to meet their dietary…

Being on National Honor Society and sports teams throughout high school, I had enjoyed participating in many volunteer experiences before coming to Drake. Every year our basketball team would collect food around our community to be donated to various food drives in nearby cities. With only general assumptions about food pantries, I always wondered how they worked. Now, after being able to volunteer at the IMPACT food pantry over the last few months, my original assumptions about food panties has transformed. The service-learning class I took this semester challenged many other perspectives in my life.…
