2. Proposed intervention
The assessment of data that has been collected above shows that Johannesburg Southern Council area has been infiltrated by sexual and gender based violence within their schools. This indicates a need for intervention within this area. For this reason, the community counsellor has decided to focus on one of places in that region; the chosen place being Eldorado. In order for the intervention to be implemented, the counsellor needs to communicate these findings with stakeholders within that community of violence. It is important to present the intervention plan in ways that the key stakeholder-being the principal of the school- sees value in it (Page, 2012). Intervention on meso-system
Meso-system is defined by Duncan et al. (2007) as the linkage the micro-systems or settings in which the individual is located. The above intervention focuses on school as a micro-system. Learners are part of families first before they are part of the community and school systems. On this level, an intervention will focus on integrating families in the community on issues that has been going on in schools and how to better shape children’s behaviour from home. This intervention will be called “open your eyes; don’t look away”.
This will be done in terms of workshops; the target will be parents and other community members who might have an interest. The aim of this workshop will be to open parents’ eyes to sexual violence that happens in schools. This will be connecting with what the learners and teachers have been psycho-educated on. However the differences will be to raise awareness on how parents can spot this kind of behaviour and how to create a warm environment where their children will feel at ease reporting these issues to …show more content…
2.3. Intervention on exo-system
Exo-system is the systems that have a n influence on micro-systems, but individuals do not have a direct contact with or influence over them (Duncan et al., 2007). The learners do not have an influence on the school’s rules and regulations. Therefore; on this level an intervention can focus on finding out the necessary rules which may be implemented to create a safe environment in schools. The person of contact will be the school governing body and the principal.
The intervention will aim at empowering victims in turn reducing incidences of sexual assault in school by setting strict rules and also; from the assessment of the first psycho-education programme the counsellor might suggest that teachers attend structured workshops on how to better handle learners who are aggressive and shows signs of violence. This will ensure that the school sustains itself with this acquired knowledge in the absence of the community counsellor. See appendix 3 for an example of suggested
