Luke’s House is a small primary care clinic that provides free, basic services to patients without a primary care provider. Most of the clinic’s patients are people who would otherwise have gone to the ER or not received care at all. The mission of Luke’s House is “to be a place of medical and spiritual hope, health and healing for the people of Greater New Orleans, to provide patient centered experiences for students, and to open a doorway to long-term healthcare solutions.” The clinic is in a low-income part of town and has highly limited resources. Adam Bradley, the executive director, is the only full-time staff at Luke’s House. All other physicians, interpreters, nurses, students, and staff are volunteers. A complication of this is that…
Target population is a critical element in any research study or proposal. Health care for the Homeless is key to the rapidly increasing problem that has plagued this country for decades. The inability of health care agencies to effectively reach and treat this population due to inaccessibility and sporadic visits by the individuals themselves has created a wide array of health problems resulting in complications to continuity of care and treatment plans as well as exacerbating any current medical conditions this particular population may have.…
Throughout my life, I have dedicated myself to act selflessly and always attempt to best represent my community. The Larner COM commitment to service aligns with my philanthropic views of healthcare. In my experience volunteering at a local homeless clinic, we ask each patient: “If you could not have come here, where would you have gone?” Many patients’ answer is nowhere. The involvement that students maintain in the local Community Health Center of Burlington provides an opportunity to work with populations similar to those I have assist in Colorado.…
The article “Doctors go bat for uninsured” by Richard Kipling, talks about practicing family medicine in one the most economically depressed cities in the country, where most of the patients do not have insurance and money. The doctors are finding way to continue providing care for their uninsured patients. This is a big problem in Modesto, California where more than seven million people are uninsured. I agree with him because most of the people who do not have insurance do not go the doctor, there are doctors how tried to help their uninsured patients, and because this problem is growing all around US. This is not just a problem for the uninsured people but also for the doctors.…
I have trouble trying to organize all the information I have printed. I was confused, and did not have a clue how to format my presentation. I have decided to keep it simple and input only what I understand so far. This task has been an eye opener as I have never evaluated myself in this manner before, it is fascinating the entire thing I 'm learning about myself.…
Patients without an established primary care physician, patients without insurance and safety often seek care in the emergency department instead of in a more appropriate care setting for their condition. I think some patients are being irresponsible…
In a situation with a homeless patient with multiple medical conditions such as HIV, TB, hepatitis, diabetes, hypertension, PTSD, and depression, this person needs quality care and special attention to details. HIV could have been related to unprotected sex; maybe this person cannot afford sexual protection. Or is this person an IV drug…
In the United States of America, it is estimated that forty eight million Americans are underinsured or uninsured (Strategic Management in Health care Organizations-2008). In today’s society, health care is a luxury indigent population cannot afford. Many families are made to choose shelter over health care when government assistance is not an option. When a family member becomes sick, the hospital emergency room becomes a walk-in clinic to treatment minor illnesses, the waiting room is usually over crowed, and this resulted in extensive waiting times to be seen by a health care provider.…
The access of health care to this vulnerable population has been known to be a major issue. The negative impact of homelessness on an individual’s physical health is well known and well documented. Studies have demonstrated that there are consistently higher rates of HIV, tuberculosis, hypertension, and respiratory illnesses in the homeless population (Zlotnick, Zerger, & Wolfe, 2013). Poverty and homelessness represent great obstacles towards health and well-being. Most homeless people lack health insurance (Zlotnick, Zerger, & Wolfe, 2013). The Affordable Care Act (ACA) should help fix this unbalance of access to care. The Affordable Care Act should help 30 million uninsured Americans have access to health care.…
As a requirement for Week 3 assignment, I interviewed Sylvester Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin gave me insight about the community he lived and oppression he went through. I would first like to profound on Mr. Baldwin today. Mr. Baldwin is retired from the United States Navy after serving 22 years. He’s also retired from a local production plant where he worked for 11 years in Montgomery, AL. Mr. Baldwin is currently an entrepreneur who operates a very successful local car detail business for over 20 years now.…

The community I grew up in deep in the heart of Austin, Texas celebrated my heritage, honored differences in culture, and fostered personal growth and self-discovery. My parents, with the strong work ethic they developed on their family’s farms in Ghana, encouraged my brother and me to work hard and find ways to use my skills to be of service to others. My experiences engaging with the communities that I have lived inspire me to become a physician dedicated to finding the most effective ways to communicate with my patients and improve their health outcomes in different types of environments. I first worked in health care locally during the summer after my sophomore year of college when I volunteered at the People’s Community Clinic. It was there that I got my first look at direct health interventions through making health education materials in the…
In an article from the American Journal of Public Health, disparities in health care have been targeted for elimination by federal agencies and professional organizations. With the Affordable Care Act the government is working on reducing disparities in health and medicine by promoting access to equitable and more efficient health care. Yet after five years in the making there is still many issues. Some including the access to care as mentioned prior, access to medical homes and care organizations, lack of preventable medications and cultural competency on these disparities. The American Journal of Public Health also notes that in some states one in five people are living in poverty. (American Journal of Public Health,…
It is critical to understand the underserved communities challenges and barriers and other factors that contributed to their situation, family, social and culture. As a future APRN, I will have the advantage of knowing the inner workings of the family while treating patients and providing complete care because I can personally relate to the challenges that face many underserved communities. In addition, I have volunteer experiences working with several Emory University physicians at the Good Samaritan Health Center, Mercy Care and National AIDS Education and Services for Minorities (NAESM) all in Fulton County, Ga. That have furthered my passion for helping those less privileged like myself. Their stories reminds me of my story growing up in Africa, it inspires me to continue my volunteer service, to gain a deeper understanding of how to implement health care to underprivileged populations. My understanding of their needs and being an empathetic listener, I will be in a better position to provide my service as needed to the hurting community at large. I will be able to have a lasting impact on a diverse patient population; much like the nurses back in Africa has had on me growing up in Africa. I long to make a difference in access to healthcare for many disadvantaged populations with my Advance Practice certification. I hope to fulfill my calling of becoming an advance practice nurse that can affect disadvantaged communities and provide complete well-rounded heath care access; I am energetic and excited at the prospect of participating in Nurse Corps program, and welcome the opportunity enthusiastically. I consider it a privilege to give back and serve the underserved…
My vision as a future nurse is to one day practice in an underserved area. I am the underserved community. So who better than me to understand the tribulations we face due to the shortage of health professionals. Being Hispanic American living the past six years in Tampa, Florida, I can relate to the challenges that face many underserved communities. For example, on March 16th, 2011 my son was born at 25 weeks; weighing 2 Lbs. and 2 oz. Moreover, with a low Apgar score chances of survival were slim. After the NICU, our life consisted of an apnea monitor, a nebulizer, oxygen tanks, medication logs, and diaper changes.…
