Community Policing Essay
Community Policing is believed to be an effective way to promote public safety in a community. “Community policing is a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies that support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques” (Sheider 2008). Concerning the testimony on behalf of the Presidential task force, community policing should focus on two additional initiatives that will make community police better off in the future.
Getting to know about community policing should be the first start. A synopsis of community policing starts off with the four basic R’s of policing. On average every police academy last around 19 weeks according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. With this short amount of time, it makes it virtually impossible to add anymore new topics or training into it. A proposal to add more time to the academies, so that the individuals can learn more about community policing with textbooks and references, also including examples before perhaps learning the hard way. In the future, community policing should focus on longer police academy’s because with more time learning in the classroom and on the job training it will better equip of officers to understand the true meaning of community policing and ensure that elements of community policing are met. According to the Department of Justice it states that “In 1999, 87% of local police officers were employed by a department that provided community policing training for some or all new recruits, and 85% by a department that provided it for at least some in-service officers.” This is important because it shows and proves that community policing has been around for a while. It also shows that above half of the new recruits in the police academy have learned or discussed about community policing. If the numbers continue to increase as we move along in time, it can only get better for community policing’s
