Community Service Experience
My community service experience was a very interesting experience because I had to work with elderly people at Brookdale Hospital: The Schulman and Schachne Institute for Nursing and Rehabilitation. The Schulman and Schachne Institute are located at Brookdale Plaza.
The Schulman and Schachne Institute for Nursing and Rehabilitation is a voluntary, non-profit, residential healthcare facility dedicated to providing the highest quality of medical care in a homelike environment. This supportive atmosphere is created by the Schulman and Schachne Institute's dedicated team of healthcare professionals, who are devoted to helping each individual regain health and strength while respecting individuality, dignity and autonomy.
My duties were taking care of the elderly, Answering phones with proper greeting, and filing reports and certain patient information. From often time to time, they moved me from floor to floor where as I dealt with different people every day. Every day I came in with a good positive attitude. I prepared their meals and gave them their daily supplies. They also showed me the parts to the hospital, they taught me the little things that I can learn how to do now such as, Wheel and Lock a Wheelchair, Take Patients in and out of there wheel cheer, etc. Every day I spent in the hospital I learned something new I learned what community service really is. I have learned responsibilities that it is not easy to do as to what the nurses do on the regular, and trust me there job is not easy. I truly now know the value of community service, which is providing a service to the community. This type of service gives me a chance to gain working experience, so that I can develop and improve on my working skills, something I lack. I am also able to build on my self-confidence. Community service gives me the opportunity to learn more about myself and my abilities. Doing community service makes me feel complete because I’m doing

For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…

Overall, community service is paying back to people and animals that are in need. That is why it is necessary for the people that are able to participate do. Not only should people do it because they have to, they should want to. I have learned this personally through my community service experiences. By participating in community service it has allowed me to change as a person and look at life differently. In the beginning I was not enthusiastic about volunteering, but afterwards it made me feel good about myself. There are many benefits of volunteering like, doing helpful things of your interest, interacting with family and friends, and receiving more knowledge about things you didn’t know. There are many aspects of community service that are not blatantly shown.…

Whether it be helping with school decorations, planting trees in the garden, or cleaning up garbage, doing service allows me to both aid my community and to know exactly how I am aiding it. It is for this reason that I enjoy community service. Often, I will sign up to help with small, individual community events. For example, a few weeks ago, I allocated six hours to help set up and operate various activities at the River Hill Community Health Fair. I am also a member of the American Red Cross, and frequently help blood donors at the Columbia Red Cross Blood Donor Center. Whether it be helping the community learn more about health, or helping facilitate blood donations to the needy, I know exactly how I help in community…

Think back to when you were a kid and you waited anxiously for the whole school year to be over with so you could do that one special thing. For my friends and I it was going to the big, red bricked church down the road and getting free sack lunches. The older I got the roles had been switched, from receiving the lunches, to providing the lunches for the anxiously waiting kids. Community service changes the life of you, and also the lives of others.…

Joseph's Hospital in main street every Wednesday at three o'clock until seven o'clock at night. Been in the hospital has shown me that they all work together, they laugh, make jokes, play around and they help each other out. They are very courteous and humorous. I help out with the water filters and go to the patients' rooms to see if they need water. Some patients would request to just put ice with no water or just water. Other days I did the hospital folders which have the menu, information about the hospital and a survey about patient satisfaction.I can answer the patient calls and just tell the nurse in charge of that patient about it.…

Continuing Care - ward 23 (RLI) Ward 23 is a combined elderly rehab and rheumatology ward. The merger of two formerly independent units has resulted in some tensions and unsettling within the staff, but overall the ward is coping well with what must have been a difficult transition phase. I really enjoyed this ward. The philosophy of care is built on maximising independence (along the lines of Orem's model) and promoting dignity and self worth to the (mainly) elderly client group. Although one cannot get away from the fact that it is a hospital ward, the aim is to make the environment as 'normal' as possible. Patients' own clothes are…
