Tita is more of a Victim than a Creator. Tita is a person that in times has a tendency of victimizing herself by not doing anything in a situation or makes an excuse to not do it. One of the ways Tita is a Victim is when she blames someone else in a situation than herself. At Mama Elena’s funeral Tita had gotten a moment to see Pedro, her endless love. Pedro had approach Tita with a hug after her sister, Rosaura. But Tita was still hurt with Pedro and the decision he had made by living her behind. The second way Tita is a Victim is when she believes her life is mostly created by outside forces. At De La Garza ranch, Tita had told Mama Elena that Pedro wanted to speak to her. Mama Elena knew exactly what Pedro had wanted and that was to ask for Tita’s hand in marriage. When Patria’s son is released from jail, she realizes the similarities. She says “But I know a godly voice when I hear one. I heard Him alright, and he was calling my name” (226). By hearing God through Trujillo, it shows that it was God as much as Trujillo for helping Patria. Both of their power is not only able to choose life or death for a person, but what happens within life, shown with this example. This is also seen, when Patria is on a pilgrimage with the rest of her family, she hears Virgin Mary, which shows signs of both God and Trujillo. Virgin Mary says “Here, Patria Mercedes, I’m here, all around you. I’ve already more than appeared” (59). This reflexes Trujillo and God, as they use their power to be everywhere. Trujillo uses the SIM to spy on everything, making sure that nobody is rebelling against him. God is assumed to be everywhere and is able to watch everyone. Since they are everywhere, Patria is angry at both at them for not stopping all the deaths that have occurred.…

According to the Office of National Statistics, last year alone, an estimated 1.4 million women were involved in cases of domestic abuse. The ONS also revealed that women who lived in poorer income homes were more likely to be victims of domestic violence. In the story “Woman Hollering Creek”, Cleofilas dreamed to live a life of luxury in the United States. Instead she was greeted with a husband that could barely support his own family, even after the promise of a happy and healthy lifestyle. In this case, Cleofilas fit the standards of the Office of National Statistics. In a discussion with TED Talks Leslie Morgan Steiner states, “I was also a very typical victim because I knew nothing about domestic violence, its warning signs or its patterns.” Steiner begins to explain that there are three steps an abuser takes. He begins by making his partner feel dominant in the relationship, then by isolating the victim, and finally introducing violence to see their reaction. In the short story, Woman Hollering Creek, Juan Pedro seems to have taken the same exact steps. To begin, Juan Pedro marries Cleofilas and promises her a life of luxury. Next, he convinces Cleofilas to move to an unfamiliar land where Mexicans were seen as inferior to Americans. Lastly, Juan Pedro introduces violence in Cleofilas life by physically abusing her. “The first time she had been so surprised she didn’t cry out or try to defend…

A victim; someone who is harmed by an event or action. Curley’s wife, a character often perceived as cruel, is really misunderstood. Throughout the story, her name is never mentioned, and while she tries to interact with the other characters, she is always pushed away and rejected. Her imitation of the cruelty she experiences is just a reflection of how she is treated by the people she tries to communicate with. The impulsiveness she exhibits while decision-making is a result of her need for attention, which only strengthens the more she is rejected and isolated. Communication is crucial to the survival and well-being of a human, and because of civilization, acknowledging somebody’s name is just basic respect. As a result of failing to acknowledge…

On the surface, Patria is portrayed as the most mundane of the Mirabal sisters because she is very religious and family-oriented character. However, Alvarez uses these characteristics and emphasizes on the events that led up to her loss of faith in order to shape her motivations for joining the revolution. In the beginning of the novel, Patria had no interest in being part of the revolution. However, her views change when surprise invasion when she was on a religious retreat. During the explosions, Patria witnesses a traumatic event when she looks out the window and witnesses the death of a young boy. She relates to this boy as if he were her own son and the terrible scene had a profound impact on her. After this traumatic event, Patria began to doubt God’s ability to protect her and her family. In her narration, she says, “I'm not going to sit back and watch my babies die, Lord, even if that's what You in Your great wisdom decide” (Alvarez 162). This event had a compelling effect on this character in two aspects. In one aspect, since Alvarez emphasized on Patria loss of faith, she was able to to transform the character, Patria from an ordinary, religious woman into a strong member of the revolution. In another aspect, by highlighting this traumatic event in Patria’s life, Alvarez was able to create depth in…

"Victim", what is a victim? Webster’s definition of a victim is "one that is prayed upon and usually affected by a force or agent." my definition of victim is someone who has had a terrible thing happen to them. By both my and Webster’s definition both the narrator from the poem "I fight like a girl" and Malinda from the book "speak" are victims. Both in the poem and in the book the narrators/main characters go thru a lot and at some point reach the point when they are finally ready to fight back and stand up for themselves.…

Falling onto the vast field of grass, John says “I almost wish we were butterflies and liv'd but three summer days - three such days with you and I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.” John compares the delight of three beautifuls days with her exceeds what one can fill in fifty common years. The way she affects Keats makes this quote so beautiful. Brawne seemed equal to a panacea for Keats before and after he found out his illness. Agreeing dearly with this quote, that when in love it seems time does not even factor in with them. The short, yet precious amount of time spent with her transcends the many spent without her.…
