To begin, there was a perpetrator who did not want any change to come forth. In the A.R. it was Great Britain. They passed unfair and outrageous tax laws, and the American colonies had no voice in the matter. They actually had no voice in parliament at all and could not vote or debate laws. The same
way Great Britain (G.B.) treated the colonies, is the same way the government treated blacks during Reconstruction. Blacks had just recently got the limited rights to vote, before then, they could not at all. Just as the A.R. helped the colonies, Reconstruction helped blacks as well. Power was given to people of lower social statuses in both events.
To add, G.B. was the KKK of the A.R. they had come to violently punish and kill those who did not agree with British ruling. In the process, streets in the cities were ruined and damaged. During Reconstruction, when blacks started to get more rights and freedom, the Klu Klux Klan (KKK) would come and burn down the homes of many, in order to scare them into conformity. The last similarity consists of changes to The Constitution. The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution during the A.R. and the 14th and 15th Amendments were attached when it came time for Reconstruction.
As you can see, both the American Revolution and Reconstruction have benefited America. For Foner to say that Reconstruction is a failed attempt is preposterous. Reconstruction helped to shape America. Today, we still put into place the amendments that were made, and we have even extended them to more types of people as well. Could a black man have the freedoms that he has today? The answer to that is no and that explains why it was a success.
