Both The Visit and Maus are highly praised works of art that have a very wide and diverse audience because of their subject matter. Both pieces of work deal with dark subject matter in their own fields even though one is a play (The Visit) and the other is a graphic novel (Maus). They each have many themes such as justice, greed, betrayal, and romance. They are able to connect to audiences with these themes regardless of their age because of its critical praise and the state of this country's views on justice. Both texts are presented differently but certain aspects are able to connect one another and to similar audiences.

Maus has certain aspects that turn its main characters from animals into humans wearing masks and impersonating one another. Like The Visit both works use its characters for important symbols like a certain race or serve as a narrator.
