Compare And Contrast Bel Canto

The novel, Bel Canto, has a similar connection to the poem called The Chambered Nautilus. These two pieces each have a character that has almost similar characterization and appearance. The nautilus from The Chambered Nautilus and Carmen from Bel Canto, both explored the uncertainty of the world or life to the afterlife. The nautilus is a sea creature that lives in a gorgeous shell. In the poem, it states, “He left the past year’s dwelling for the new, / Stole with soft step its shining archway though” (Holmes 18-19). This means the nautilus leaves his home and in search of a new one. Then later he forgets his past and focus on the future as the poem states, “Leave thy low-vaulted past” (Holmes 31)! He discovered the uncertainty of the world
for the future. He later then died to rest in piece. Carmen is a shy beautiful young terrorist. She is very kind and curious and wants to discover things as she grew. Throughout the story, Carmen discovered the understanding of music. The narrator states, “This was the happiest time of her life and it was because of the music. When she was a child dreaming on her pallet at night, she never dreamed of pleasures like these” (Patchett 156). The music help her understood he life now than the past when she was a child. Later in the story, she discovers love. Carmen and Gen kiss as the narrator states, “He kissed her. There was such an incredible logic to kissing such as a metal-to-magnet pull between two people that it was wonder that they found the strength to prevent themselves from succumbing every second” (Patchett 250). She discover the uncertainty of music and love. She later died by killed the government forces. The nautilus and Carmen are both sweet and good looking. They both discover and leave their past behind. Both of them at least have really amusing moments after their life is taken.
