Lutherans followed the theology of Martin Luther. One of the main doctrines of Lutherans is the belief that justification is through one’s faith in God alone. This was a major controversy at the time due to the Catholic belief being that one must perform good works as well as have faith in order to become justified in the eyes of the Lord. Luther’s main problem with the Catholic’s view on justification was the allowance of indulgences. In his opinion, indulgences were one step away from bribing the way to justification. If a Christian believed, but didn’t have what Catholics would consider enough good-works, they could perform a couple indulgences to make up for it.
