Europeans arrival
was an unexpected invasion that would alter American indigenous societies in both a positive and negative way. The Europeans would operate America in their own way but sometimes taking others idea in the process. They brought with them many different resources like animals, plants, cannons, steel weapons, and most importantly deadly diseases. The introduction to Europeans in America would lead to a destructive decline of Amerindian population because of these diseases. The germs were so damaging that more people died due to this germ than from actual battle combat. During the time of the smallpox, this devastating disease resulted in five to ten percent of the islands population being survivors. Europeans later began regulating and took away resources like tomatoes, beans, tobacco and instead began importing live stock such as cattle and horses. They would later also hurt the indigenous mammals by cutting down trees which would demolish their habitats. Their presence at the beginning was indeed a major set back for current residents because they had to adapt to sudden change and get business down a certain way at times. Europeans wanted control and wanted the land to be run by their wishes and their commands.
The Spanish and Portuguese both contributed to the New World’s development. The Spanish also introduced cattle and herds of sheep. However, due to high reproduction rate, they would tear down landscapes with their hooves. Although the Spanish came to America to search for silver and gold, they were able to learn more about different crops throughout their journey like corn and potatoes. The Spanish had a huge focus on producing sugarcane for business. Since their demand was so high for sugarcane, the slave trade expanded because the production of sugarcane needed to quicken. However, the Spanish were very open minded to other leaders and places ideas and practices. For example, they endorsed the Inca’s and Aztec’s practices of enforcing labor from villages. This helped contribute different mechanisms in helping shape the New world. Due to their willingness to negotiate, they brought together a large number of people and ecosystems that would for many years were developed on their own. After time had passed and they were all beginning to adapt to each other, they began teaching each other new forms of agriculture. The Amerindians later show Europeans how to grow crops like corn and potatoes. Eventually Chinese caught on and realized were it was best fit for a certain crop to be grown in a specific environment. They created a system in which they could help each other out and they could restart the New World. They also used the Atlantic system in which they would use military power to help keep the system together. Throughout their new techniques Europeans found different opportunities for colonization, conquest of other undiscovered new land, and trade.
