Most people today think that people are born to be successful. In Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, he proves there are numerous factors that will help to succeed. To support his idea, he uses examples such as, cut-off date of the Canadian Hockey League, how Bill Gates and the Beatles spent at least 10,000 hours. In addition, he uses stories of Chris Langan, and Robert Oppenheimer to compare how one can succeed and can fail with extremely high IQs. Furthermore, Gladwell utilizes story Joseph Flom to show how he was able to build successful law firms with different cultural background. At last, he describes how cultural difference play a large role in looking into intelligence and decision…

Angela Lee Duckworth has been getting a large amount of fame for her work on grit these past few years, but some people are wondering if what she’s claiming is in reality duplicitous. Marcus Crede, an Assistant Professor of psychology at Iowa State University, claims that grit isn’t as important or effective as everyone thinks. In an article, Anya Kamenetz summarizes Crede’s refutation into three points. One piece of Duckworth’s evidence on the power of grit is that there is a higher percentage of people who have grit that achieve their goals. While it is plausible, the percentage is not as high as it is interpreted. Kamenetz writes that Crede states, "Cadets who scored a standard deviation higher than average on the Grit–Scale were 99% more…

In Crede’s main point he criticizes recent studies on regarding GRIT and success. Crede states that Duckworth is responding to grit incorrectly because he is making it a bigger issue than it is. He is very dramatic on this topic. Grit is parallel to conscientiousness, according to psychologists who say it is not changeable, whereas Duckworth argues that grit is changeable versus Credes view who agrees with psychologists. Plus crede feels that a lot of the information is regurgitated or overused; for example, he states, "And it doesn't tell us anything that we don't already know." It may seem like Crede has the world against him but there are new studies that show similar beliefs as she. As in a new study that will be issued in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology”. Is evidence…

Knowledge and intelligence are specific characteristic traits that can lead us to experiencing professional success. Suppose a child scores within the 135-140 range on an IQ test. People would assume that child will become successful in life based on their high IQ score. The question is, how are certain people able to succeed in life while others tend to struggle? Is it solely based off their intelligence or IQ? Opportunities? Race and culture? In Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Trouble with Geniuses, Part 2” and “The Ethnic Theory of Plane Crashes”, two chapters taken from his book Outliers: The Story of Success (2008), claims that there is a misunderstanding on what success is and how it can be achieved. Gladwell feels that the idea of having an extremely high IQ and success is faulty because there are various other factors to consider that can contribute to levels of success. In chapter four Gladwell argues that it is not a high IQ that defines success, but concerted cultivation. He emphasizes that concerted cultivation and opportunities given are essential to success regardless of one’s intelligence level because it is difficult to achieve success alone. He provides an example with a character named Chris Langan who had been limited to opportunities and success. In chapter seven, Gladwell claims that communication is an important principle to succeed professionally. However, Gladwell’s claims are complicated and supported by two other sources, "Dave Chapelle talks with Charlie Rose" (2007) by Charlie Rose and “Rethinking Hofstede: Intercultural Management in Poland” (2003) by Greg Allen.…

A growth mindset and grit connect to each other in some sort of way. A person with a growth mindset can take up a challenge and not complain about it. The person wants to learn and overcome obstacles when faced with them. A growth mindset allows the person to think of the future and not just the moment. On the other hand, there is a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset isn’t a terrible thing, but it does set you back. A person with a fixed mindset will not take up challenges or face obstacles, they think about only now. Grit is similar to a growth mindset because it shows perseverance. Grit is how hard you can work and how long you can work this hard. Grit is the long-term goals that a person can set and still achieve. Gritty people focus on the future, just like growth mindset people. Both grit and a growth mindset aren’t based on talent, IQ or intelligence, its based on your work ethic.…
