On May 4th 1961 the first freedom rides bus left Washington D.C. headed for the south, to protest the racism, discrimination and segregation facing African Americans in the deep south. They protested by riding in mixed races to challenge many southern state laws on segregation in seating. well known activist and freedom rider Charles Person said "You didn't know what you were going to encounter. You had a night ride. You had hoodlums. . . You could be antagonized at any point in your journey.” This quote displays the constant fear many if not all riders faced because of the abuse perpetually inflicted upon the protesters but they still persevered and continued their protests. They protested by riding in mixed races to challenge many southern state laws on segregation in seating.
