However, the government at that time had nothing to fund for a new stadium, which was later resolved when a very wealthy architect by the name Georgios Averoff, had donated one million drachmas, today approximately 100 000 dollars to restore an old stadium known as the Penathenaic Stadium, which was first built in 330 B.C still during the times of the ancient Olympics. So one can see that the stadiums of both the ancient Olympics and the first modern day Olympics were essential and is evident that both times were in need of stadiums for the mass of spectators that followed, but the first modern Olympics games would clearly still need updated and better stadiums than those of the ancient Olympics. Athletes were not chosen internationally, but did travel and compete in the games at their own expense. Some of the athletes happened to even be tourists around the area at the time of the games, and decided to compete. When compared to that of the first modern Olympics of 1896, it is evident that not just anyone could participate...there was a selection process or trials if you to determine who best fit into each countries team to represent the country, this also meant taking physique into consideration during the first modern Olympics instead of any random person with any physique taking part such as in the ancient Olympics and athletes at the time wore club colours or uniform instead of national team uniforms whereas in the first modern Olympics they wore national team uniforms. These games first consisted of 245 athletes and each from only 14 different countries. No women were allowed to compete in the games originally.
