One obvious difference is class size. The number of students per class in United State is less than the number of students per class in Japan. Usually the class sizes in the West are much smaller than in Asia. For example, the average number of elementary school student per class in the United States is around 24 (based on data from the US Department of Education) while the number of students per class in most of Asian countries is around 40. In the US, most people believe that smaller class sizes lead to better academic performance. Teacher shave given the reasons that fewer students per class will lead to less peer disturbance and increase more time for both students and teachers to concentrate on their work. Consequently, this will eliminate the dropout rate, better performance in the youngest age group and ethnic minority groups. However, the concepts of smaller class sizes which lead to better academic performance do not apply to other Asian countries. In Japan, even though the class sizes are larger than in the US, the performance of the students especially in math and science are better than American students. This shows that class size is not the major impact to Japanese students while discipline is one of the most important factors behind their academic success (Zorpette 2001, p.11).
Family condition is another different between the two regions. The divorce rate in the US is higher than in Asian countries. In the US the percentage of American students who have two parents have decreased from 85% to
