Everyone wanted better pay and shorter hours for the most part. Family’s wanted their kids to be pulled out of working at such young ages starting at 5. The unions would go on strike, work slower, or do picketing. The owner would often shut down the union by forbidding it, making them sign a yellow dog contract, or hire new people. The grate railroad strike for example: railroad workers organized unions to protest unfair wage cuts and unsafe working conditions. They were put down by federal troops. The A.R.U. formed the American railway union, which allowed the small unions to become one big one. Unions like the NAACP formed to help out their ethnicity to get rights. The NAACP is the National Association Advancement for Colored People. LULAC and AIM did the same thing but for their own race. On top of horrible working condition were horrible living conditions. Major Northern cities became over populated with everyone coming in making in an urban area.
