Tommy Wozny North America (1450-1700 A.D.) and Latin America (1450-1700 A.D.) have many similarities, yet differences as well. One of the main differences between the two is their government system. In Latin America, the government used an Ecomienda system, and a Mit’a system, while in North America, they were more independent, and used viceroyalties. Another difference between the two was the labor system. In Latin America, there were slave labor systems that developed, causing the slaves to work more hours. While in North America, they already had a slave labor system, as well as indentured servants. One of the similarities between the two is how their social classes were quite similar. They both were hierarchical within the colonies. The government systems between the Latin Americans and the North Americans were very different. didn’t have many rights, and weren’t very independent. The Latin Americans split into colonies and used viceroyalties to rule them. Spain had split into four colonies in Latin America, while Portugal only had one. However, in North America, the governments operated independently from the kings. They did have assemblies and had less elaborate bureaucracies’. The North Americans used kings to control regulations, and their viceroyalties did not have much power at all. Another system between North America and Latin America is the way their labor systems operated.
One of the biggest contributing factors to why these two had different labor systems is their ways of slave labor. In Latin America, there weren’t a lot of interracial marriages. This is because the African slaves, and the Native American slaves were had much longer working hours. However, in North America, the labor systems that developed were slavery and indentured servitude. The slaves in North America didn’t have to work as much as the slaves in Latin America. Also, interracial marriage did go on in North America. Interracial marriage was bigger in North America than it was in Latin America because the slaves didn’t have to work as much, so they had time to be married. Also, the natives in Latin America were forced to work, while the natives in North America were usually just pushed to the
side. One of the main similarities is the social classes between Latin America, and North America. Latin America and North America were both hierarchical. In North America, the social classes were hierarchical mainly in the southern colonies (Black vs. White), but generally less hierarchical and rigid than in Latin America. While in Latin America, their social structure was hierarchical in their colonies based on ethnicity, not skin color. The Native Americans were always thought of as unimportant between the two. They were mistreated and used as slaves in Latin America, but just mistreated in North America. Almost all of the social classes between the two colonies were mainly among Europeans. Also, both Latin and North America used somewhat of a caste system. They had the Viceroyalties and lords on the top, while the slaves were at the bottom. In conclusion, both North America and Latin America shared differences and similarities. The government systems and labor systems between the two were very different. While the social system between the two was quite similar.
