Comparing Jan Beatty's My Father Teaches Me To Dream And Labor

“Jan Beatty’s My Father Teaches Me to Dream (1952) and Baron Wormer’s’ Labor (2008) are poems that discuss the same topic but the one poem portrays that work is necessity and there is no choice in the matter. Where the other poem gives you the impression that work is appreciated and amazing. Both works discuss how employment defines life. To some, work is just work and there is nothing to look forward to and it is just something that must be done. But, to others it is enjoying and appreciating their work because it is something they love do and would not want to do anything else. Starting small and then building it into something big through hard work and loving it every step of the way. Living in the woods and working as a labored logger requires strength, endurance and the reason to want stay. The smell, taste and feel of the surroundings is what makes him happy. The outside world holds not interest to him. A career to achieve better and more is not the way he wants to live. Everything he wants is all right in front of him in the work he does is by hard labor. In his mind the trees and the land are his world and he would just gaze into the sky amazed how nature just grows and reaches for the skies. The veteran loggers would all congregate at a local bar in order to relax and talk with their peers. They would say teasing the young man, “Workin’ hard There, sonny, or more like hardly workin’?” The young man would not respond, even though he would be sore, tired and barely being able to move his body from working to exhaustion all day long, but he would with the veterans and nod his head in agreement. All along with a big smiling fool. But deep down he know all in all they loved their jobs
