She saw the most enchanting narcissus, a flower with white petals and an orange or yellow middle. As she reached down to grab the flower, the earth beneath her feet suddenly cleaved open and through the gap Hades raised up on his chariot with black horses. Hades snatched up the beautiful maiden before she could scream for help and he descended them into his underworld nightmare while the gap in earth closed after them. Zeus witnessed this, as well as the god of the sun, Helios. Zeus decided to stay silent about what had happened to prevent a war with his brother. Helios wisely thought he better not get involved in anything that did not concern him. Distraught and heartbroken Demeter wandered the earth looking for her daughter until her good friend Hecate, Goddess of wilderness and childbirth, advised her to seek help from Helios, the all-seeing Sun god, in order to find her daughter.
