your definition of color? When I think of color I see everyone being one in the same,
unfortunately this is not the truth due to the lack of education or the ignorance that
has effected generations of people. In this essay, I will be discussing the similarities
as well as differences in The Green Mile and Fruitvale Station.
History is a big part of how our society has come about today, the information that
we are teaching our children in the classrooms is just a little bit of what it was like in
the 1800’s. Fist off, I would like to talk a little bit about how America was created
and the unfortunate truth about the United States. The slave trade in the United …show more content…
States began in the 1640’s and later on ended, in 1877. This almost being two
hundred years of slavery in the United States, the point I am trying to make is that
even after 1877, slavery was abolished but the meaning of color was not. A lot
happened after 1877 such as Martin Luther King Jr. dying to make the rights of
African Americans equal. The issue today just like over 300 years ago when will
color, just is color you see in a picture and not through someone’s skin!
Once you have watched The Green Mile and Fruitvale Station it will be clear to you
that our society can be very unjust at times, the common theme throughout both
movies is the main characters are both of African American decent. In The Green
Mile, John Coffey is the person being charged with a crime he did not commit and
this comes to light as the film plays out. In Fruitvale Station Oscar Grant III, is seen
as a thug to society and therefore he is portrayed as something he is not and
unfortunately is killed due to this reason.
As John Coffey stated, “ I’m tired of all the
pain I feel and hear in the world every day.” The fact that they both characters are
attempting to do what is right in the community, until it is to late and the system has
failed to recognize the unjust.
The differences between the two movies, would be the fact that Fruitvale Station
was based on a true story, that happened in Northern California while The Green
Mile is fictional. Aside from The Green Mile not being real it was created in 1999,
and Fruitvale Station happened in 2009. The story line is a lot different as well
because the man in Fruitvale Station, has just come out of jail and is trying to
rekindle the relationship he has with his family, while John is innocent of his
convictions and awaiting his death while creating a relationship with a correctional
officer.
The biggest thing I saw between these two movies, was the fact that racism and
color was so profound in the movies. It just tells you what Martin Luther King Jr.
fought for was prevalent to society even today. Like stated, Oscar Grant was a real
man with real dreams and a family, he did not see his future due to the lack
of
education our society and law enforcement has. John Coffey, may have just been a
character but he is a hero in my eyes because he tried to do everything, right. And,
as stated at the beginning, both movies had there similarities and differences, but
both proved that society can be very unjust.
