Comparing Zola And Major Du Paty De Clam
Emile Zola was born on April 2, 1840 in Paris, France. Zola spent most of his youth in southern France where his father was a civil engineer of Italian decent. Upon completion of school at the Lycee Saint- Louis in Paris, he failed the Baccalaureate exam twice, which prevented him from furthering his studies. This led to Zola living in poverty for the next couple of years until he got a job as a clerk, which would eventually lead him to his writing career (His Masterpiece Pg. 28). In the novel “Zola and his Time”, it describes Zola as a very timid man that was easily startled by confrontation and violence (Zola and his time Pg. 434). Zola was strongly disliked by the Deroulede’s Indians who stood outside Zola’s home and chanted at him and through …show more content…
He states that the Major “leads them all, hypnotizes them, for he is also interested in spiritism, occultism, he talks with spirits….. The traps he laid, seem incredible; the mad investigations, the monstrous hoax, a whole harrowing dementia” (Zola and his Time Pg. 438). What he is saying, is that the Major has manipulated the facts as well as the people involved in the case to make it look like Dreyfus is guilty. This led to the ministry going back at Zola and his accomplices for the statements he had made. The government brought Zola to trial on February 7th 1898, where thousands gathered to watch. Zola was eventually found guilty and was granted the maximum sentence under the law, which consisted of one year imprisonment, and a 3,000 francs …show more content…
Throughout the chapter J’accuse, the author constantly makes remarks like “when the “cause” seemed to demand of him the obliteration of himself, the apparent sacrifice of his own honor, he is willing!”(Zola and His Time Pg. 447). What the author is saying here is Zola sacrificed his own life and his honor to fight for something that is right even though he knew there would be strong opposition. As the chapter goes on and gets into his trial, Zola attacks those who have twisted the laws around and went after innocent men. While having a lot of support, he has even more that despise him and what he is doing, but that does not deter him from standing behind his argument. He pleaded over and over again in front of the jury that Dreyfus was innocent and even swore on all that he has accomplished in his life that the man he is fighting for is

Zora Neale Hurston was born in Notasulga, Alabma, but primarily grew up in Eatonville, Florida. Eatonville was the first all black town in the United States and is featured heavily in the novel. This may in fact be because Hurston considered Eatonville to be her true home and claimed a few times to be her birthplace. This is because, in 1901, according to A Crticial Companion to Zora Neale Hurston: A Literary Reference to her Life and Work by Sharon L. Jones, school teachers from the north visited Eatonville and gave Hurston "a number of books that opened her mind to literature" this may be why she sometimes describes her "birth" as taking place that year [Sharon L. Jones pp 3-4]…

History had left many with wrongful convictions, while no one can be certain of a person's innocents, looking back it appears as if many trials were conducted poorly, and that the convictions of were based on unreliable and unbelievable circumstantial evidence. Now, only in hindsight, is it seen the errors made initially, and the failure of justice caused hysteria. Never is this more evident then in Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, and Edna St. Vincent poem, Justice Denied in Massachusetts.…

In the story “The Piece of String”, Maitre Hauchecome was an outsider. His economic position was very weak. Zora's date of birth is said to be in January of 1891, however her actual date of birth is debated today due to the fact that records of African Americans during the 19th century were not accurately kept (Lyons 2). Zora's home town, which was not disputed, was Eatonville, Florida, which was founded by African Americans and was the first all-black town incorporated into the United States (Cheryl@geocities [online] ). Her father John Hurston was a tall, heavy muscled man who often seemed "invincible" to Zora (Lyons 2). John was a community leader and was influential member of society. His positions in Eatonville included: Baptist preacher, town mayor, and skilled carpenter (Lyons 2). Though John was a revered member of Eatonville he had is faults as well. His eye for other women often left his family home alone for months out of a time (Lyons 1). Zora's mother, Lucy Potts Hurston was the "hard-driving force in the family."(Lyons 2) Lucy was a country schoolteacher, who taught all her children how to read and write, which lead to six out of her seven children earning a college degree (Lyons 2-3). Unfortunately, Lucy Hurston died when Zora was nine years of age (Otfinoski 46). Zora was the seventh child out of a family of eight (Otfinoski 45). During her childhood she felt unloved by her father and thus was seen as the odd on out (Lyons 2).…

He capitulates all of his previous arguments through a simple contrasting statement: “You will see a diabolical pride and a natural humility seated side by side in the selfsame soul.” The simple comparison between the two aspects of Joan’s persona, one of sin and one of service, presents evidence for the jury to consider how perplexing of a character that she is. And while the Inquisitor must remind the jury to be wary for that devilish personality, he concludes his speech with the actual call to action: “I say, if you hate cruelty, remember that nothing is so cruel in its consequences as the toleration of heresy.” Knowing the perception of the jury as having a natural inclination toward defending someone apparently innocent, the Inquisitor makes a stronger case by demonstrating through many examples that while Joan looks sinless, she has an abundant potential for sin. Finally, he uses the evidence that he has provided to force the compassion out of the jury’s heart and make them consider the true implications of not finding Joan…
